Did you know that according to a study by LawnStarter, Kentucky, Oklahoma, and North Dakota are the top states to start a farm in 2021? Pretty cool, right?

Now, on the other side of the coin, we have Alaska, Maine, and Connecticut ranking as 50th, 49th, and 48th respectively. So, not as enticing for starting a farm or ranch in those areas.

LawnStarter did a comparison of all 50 states using 44 different criteria to determine the best states for starting a farm or ranch. They looked at things like available infrastructure, how common farming and ranching are, the environment, cost, and the potential returns on investment for each state.

The Cream of the Crop: Best States to Start a Farm in 2021

Now, let me give you a little background on how important the agriculture industry is in the United States. In 2019, the food and agriculture industry contributed $1.109 trillion to the US economy, making up 5.2% of the country’s overall income. That’s a pretty big deal!

I live in Kentucky, which is the top state for farming. We have lots of fertile land and a high number of farms compared to our state’s size. Most of these farms are owned by families, which is pretty cool.

On the other hand, states like Wyoming, Montana, and Nevada have the biggest average farms. They have a lot of land to work with! In contrast, states like New Hampshire, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Massachusetts have the smallest average farms. They probably have to be more creative because of their limited space.

If you’re thinking of starting a farming business, the central Great Plains is the place to be. States like Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas offer cheap land, a great climate for growing crops, and lots of support from the infrastructure. It’s a farmer’s dream!

You might think that the Deep South is all about agriculture, but states like Louisiana and Alabama aren’t actually ranked that high. They’re kind of in the middle or even lower on the list. But they still do pretty well in some areas.

When I travel to the Western part of the United States, I am surprised to learn that California doesn’t perform very well in this study. Despite being the top agricultural state in terms of return on investment, it actually ranks as the worst state when it comes to cost. California has the highest average expenses for farm production out of all the states.

Now let’s talk about the different farming metrics. Many states have competing metrics that balance each other out. For example, states with high populations and crop yields often have high land prices and less land available for farming. However, Kentucky falls right in the middle and is considered the best state for new farmers and ranchers.

On the other hand, the Southern states are not as friendly towards farming. Louisiana, in particular, ranks the lowest among all states in terms of the number of new farms established in the last year. This shows a significant decrease in farming activity in that state.

So, it seems like the West and the South have contrasting performances when it comes to farming.

Starting a small new ranch or farm in an already crowded corporate field can be quite challenging. California, along with a few other states, has one of the lowest percentages of family-owned farms. Although California is a good place for growing food, it may not be the best state for your agribusiness to thrive.

There’s Money to be Made in Farming

Investing in farms has been a profitable venture in recent years. According to the Department of Agriculture, the net farm income in the US was projected to reach $134.1 billion in 2020.
