1. Get to Know Your Top Customers. Have you ever wondered who your best customers are? These are the people who bring in the most profit for your business. You can figure this out by looking at how much they spend with you each year. It’s also important to find out if these customers belong to a specific group or have certain interests. While it’s important to know your products and services well, it’s even more important to understand how your business adds value to your customers’ lives. This way, you can keep meeting their needs and make sure they keep coming back. Remember to show gratitude to your customers because they have a choice and don’t owe you their business.

Step 2: Have a Conversation With Your Clients. Imagine if your three most important clients were here with you right now. What would you want to know from them? Even if you’ve been working with them for a long time, it’s important to make time for a face-to-face meeting every three months. This way, you can ask for their feedback and catch up on what’s been going on in their lives. It’s crucial to stay in touch with their needs and understand any new factors that might affect their decision-making. Prepare a list of ten questions to ask them, but don’t forget to also engage in some casual conversation about their families, vacations, or upcoming holidays. Building a personal relationship with your clients will give you valuable insights and a strong ally by your side.

3. Make Sure Your Marketing and Sales Efforts are Aligned. When it comes to running a small business, it’s crucial that your sales and marketing teams are on the same page. Even if you’re the only salesperson and handle all the marketing yourself, you need to strategize your marketing program based on the number of leads you need to generate to meet your monthly sales goals. Let’s say you need 500 leads each month to make 50 sales. In order to drive the right amount of traffic, you’ll need to figure out how many phone calls, emails, blog posts, Facebook ads, and Twitter messages you should make, send, or post each month. It’s important to establish a sales process and actively work on your marketing efforts to make sure they deliver the results you’re aiming for.

5. Building Relationships for Success. The key to thriving in business is to create win-win relationships. This means embracing the philosophy of give to get. When you establish a strong strategic alliance, you open doors to a multitude of advantages. By joining forces, you can reduce risks, share costs, and expedite your time to market. But how can you cultivate a partnership that will truly benefit your bottom line? Well, first and foremost, it’s crucial to understand your potential partner’s priorities. And remember, it’s always better to align with someone who offers different products or services, rather than competing directly with your own offerings.

Step 6: Polish Your 30-Second Commercial or Elevator Pitch. My most important job as a small business owner is to sell myself and my business. When I can briefly explain what I do, it helps build trust. But I shouldn’t use the same pitch all the time. Sometimes, I need to mix it up a little. I could add a short list of clients I’ve worked with or mention a recent award or media mention. The goal of an elevator pitch is to grab the attention of my target audience and keep the conversation going. I just need to be careful not to overwhelm them with too much information. I should only offer enough to pique their interest and make them want to continue talking to me.

But wait, we’re not done yet! Now comes the fun part. Get creative! Find pictures in magazines or use clip art to represent each of your goals. The idea is to create a visual collage that shows what you’re aiming for.

Hang your vision board where you can see it every day. This way, when you’re feeling frustrated or demotivated, you can look at it and remember why you work so hard. It’s a powerful reminder of what you’re striving for.
