9 Tips I Use to Make My Windows 7 Computer Faster

By Ronald Smith

I’m here to share with you some essential tips that I personally use to speed up my Windows 7 computer. These tricks will not only make your computer faster but also improve its overall performance. Let’s get started!

Windows 7 is a great operating system that was designed for speed. However, over time, your computer may start to slow down. This is not Windows 7’s fault, but rather a common issue that affects many operating systems.

There are a few reasons why this happens. Your computer’s hard drive may become filled with unnecessary files, you may have too many programs running in the background, or you could be using too many visual effects and sounds. But don’t worry, I have some tips to help you!

Tips for Better Performance

1. Use Less Visual Effects

To boost performance, you can disable certain visual effects on your computer. Here’s how you can do it:

1. Press the Windows key and, while holding it down, press the Pause/Break key.

2. In the window that appears, click on Advanced system settings in the left side pane.

3. In the Advanced tab, under the Performance Section, click on Settings.

4. In the Performance Options window (refer to the figure), go to the Visual Effects tab and disable the options that you don’t need. Alternatively, you can select ‘Adjust for best performance’ to disable all options.

5. Once you have disabled the desired options, click Apply and then OK.

By turning off unnecessary visual effects, you can enhance your computer’s performance. Give it a try and see the difference it makes!

When you make those changes, the screen might not look as good, but it will definitely make things run a lot faster.

2. Minimizing Sound Effects

When it comes to sound effects, less is more. Follow these steps to reduce unnecessary sounds:

9 Tips I Use to Make My Windows 7 Computer Faster

To get started, follow these steps:

1. Click on “Start”.

2. In the search box, type “mmsys.cpl” and press “Enter”.

3. In the “Sound” window that appears, click on the “Sounds” tab.

4. Set the sounds scheme to “No Sounds”.

5. If necessary, you can choose specific sounds for program events by selecting the event and choosing a sound from the drop-down menu.

6. You can also disable the option to play the Windows Startup sound.

7. Once you’ve made the desired settings, click “Apply” and then “OK”.

Now, let’s talk about software and services that are related to this topic. The first thing you should do is run a trusted antivirus program. This will help protect your computer from any potential threats.

Make sure you’ve got a good anti-virus software on your laptop or computer. This will protect your system from malware and spyware. Without this type of protection, there’s a risk of harmful third-party software being installed on your system, which can take up valuable space and cause problems.

2. Only install essential software

Be careful to only install the software that you actually need. If you try out a trial version and realize you don’t need it, uninstall and delete it right away. Otherwise, it could take up disk space and slow down your computer.

If you’ve installed a software that you can’t remove and it’s messing up your laptop, you might need to format your hard drive. Just remember that formatting will delete all your data.

So, it’s a good idea to back up your information before you go ahead with formatting.

3. Turn off unnecessary services manually

Some processes and services that aren’t really necessary are set to start automatically when your system starts up. They use up RAM and slow down important tasks. It’s best to disable them. Here’s what you need to do:

Here’s how you can make changes to your computer’s start-up programs to speed up your system boot time.

  1. Start by clicking on the Start button. In the search box, type services.msc, and then hit Enter.
  2. Navigate to Services & Applications and then select Services. This will open the Services window (see the figure below).
  3. To set a service to manual or disable it, right-click on a service of your choice. If the service is already running, make sure to Stop it first.
  4. Once the service is stopped, right-click on it again and choose Properties.
  5. In the Startup type, you can either set the service to Manual if you’ll need to use it later, or Disable it if it’s not necessary.
  6. Once you’re done, simply close the window.
4. Speeding up System Start-up by Disabling Unwanted Programs

Have you ever noticed that when you start your computer, it takes a while for everything to get up and running? Well, there’s a reason for that. Some programs are set to automatically start when your system boots up, and this can slow down the whole process.

But don’t worry, you can take control and speed things up. You see, not all programs are necessary to have running right from the start. So, it makes sense to disable those that you don’t really need.

Here’s how you can do it:

9 Tips I Use to Make My Windows 7 Computer Faster

  1. Let’s begin by clicking on the “Start” button. In the search box, type “msconfig” and press “Enter”.
  2. Now, we need to go to the “System Configuration” window. You can find this window in the figure shown below. Once you’re there, select the “Startup” option.
  3. We’re going to disable some processes that aren’t important for start-up. To do this, uncheck the boxes next to those processes.
  4. After you’ve disabled the unnecessary processes, click on the “Apply” and “OK” buttons.

Hard Drive related

1. Clean up the hard drive

To free up some space on your hard drive, it’s a good idea to remove unwanted files. This includes things like temporary files, downloaded program files, and files in the recycle bin. You can use the “Disk Cleanup” option to do this. Just follow these steps:

9 Tips I Use to Make My Windows 7 Computer Faster

  1. To get started, let’s open up the Disk Cleanup tool. You can do this by clicking on the Start button, then navigating to All Programs, Accessories, and finally System Tools. From there, you’ll see an option for Disk Cleanup. Give it a click!
  2. Once you open Disk Cleanup, it will calculate how much space you can free up. In the window that pops up (check out the picture for reference), you’ll see a list of files that you can delete. Go ahead and select the files you want to get rid of from the Files to delete list.
  3. If you want to delete “System Restore” and “Shadow copy” files, click on the “Clean up system files” button. Then, head over to the “More Options” tab.
  4. Now it’s time to finish up. Just click OK. Before everything gets deleted, you’ll get one last prompt asking if you’re sure. Make sure to click Yes.
2. Let’s Speed Things Up with Write Caching

Hey there! Did you know that there’s an awesome feature that can make your computer run smoother? It’s called “Write Caching”, and it allows your operating system to save changes to your hard drive in the background while you’re not using it, so that it doesn’t slow down your performance when you’re actually using it. Sounds pretty cool, right?

If you want to enable “Write Caching” on your computer, just follow these simple steps:

  • Step 1: Open up your operating system’s settings.
  • Step 2: Look for the “Write Caching” option.
  • Step 3: Enable the “Write Caching” option.
  • And that’s it! Once you’ve enabled “Write Caching”, your computer will be able to save changes to your hard drive without slowing you down. Pretty neat, huh? Now you can use your computer without any worries about performance!

9 Tips I Use to Make My Windows 7 Computer Faster

To make changes to your hard drive’s write caching settings on Windows, follow these steps:

    1. First, press the Windows key and, while holding it down, press the Pause/Break key.

    2. In the window that appears, look for “Device Manager” on the left side and click on it.

    3. In the next window, find “Disk drives” and click on it to expand the options.

    4. Look for your hard drive in the drop-down list. Right-click on it and choose “Properties”.

    5. In the “Device Properties” window, click on the “Policies” tab (see the figure for reference).

    6. You’ll find a checkbox next to “Enable write caching on the device”. Check this box.

    7. Additionally, you can also check the box next to “Turn off Windows write-cache buffer flushing on the device” if you wish. Once you’re done, click “OK”.

These steps will allow you to adjust the write caching settings for your hard drive on Windows.

Important: However, there is a downside to enabling these options – if there’s a power outage or a system crash, your data could be lost or damaged. If you have a backup power supply, such as a UPS, you can proceed with checking these options.

Step 3: Speed up your computer with Disk Defragmentation

When your hard drive doesn’t have enough space to hold a file, the operating system breaks it up into smaller pieces and stores them in different parts of the drive. Defragmentation puts all these pieces together in one place, making your computer run faster. To defragment your disk, follow these steps:

9 Tips I Use to Make My Windows 7 Computer Faster

    1. First, let’s get started by opening Disk Defragmenter. You can find it by clicking on the Start menu, then selecting All Programs, followed by Accessories and System Tools. Finally, click on Disk Defragmenter.
    2. Once the new window pops up (you can take a look at the picture for reference), choose the drive you want to defragment and click on Analyze disk.
    3. Wait for a moment while your computer estimates how long the defragmentation process will take. Once the estimation is complete, click on Defragment disk to start the process.
    4. After the defragmentation is finished, you can do two things: check the View Report to get more details or just click Close to finish up.

That’s all there is to it. These simple steps can have a big impact on improving the performance of your Windows 7 computer. If you have any personal tips or tricks that you’ve used to enhance performance, we’d love to hear from you.
