Why do some people choose WeChat over other messaging apps like WhatsApp or Viber? Well, one reason is that WeChat has some cool and convenient features that make it stand out. For example, they have this thing called “Moments” where you can share photos, videos, or just update your status, kind of like Facebook. Plus, you can even use WeChat on your computer through a web browser.
We’ve already shared some WeChat tips and tricks before (you might want to check out that post first), but this time, we’ve gathered 10 more tips and tricks to help you make the most out of WeChat.
Note: These tips and tricks were tested on an Android device, so the steps might be a bit different if you’re using an iPhone.

20 WhatsApp Tips & Tricks
Hey there! I’m here to tell you all about the amazing features that WhatsApp has been rolling out to make messaging super easy and fun for all its users. Let’s dive right in!
1. How to Upload & Send Videos to Moments
Sharing videos on WeChat is a piece of cake, but for some strange reason, we can’t do it on Moments just yet. But fear not, my friend! I’ve got a neat little trick up my sleeve that allows you to share your uploaded videos and send them to Moments. Here’s how:
- Join a chat room and click the + sign at the bottom. Then, select Video.
- Choose either Record a New Video or Retrieve an Existing Video from your device.
- After the video uploads, press and hold the video in the chat room. Then, select Add to Favorites.
- Return to the WeChat main page and tap the menu icon. From there, choose Favorite Messages.
- Locate the favorited video, tap on it, and then tap the menu icon again. Choose Send to Moments.
- Write a message in the empty space and tap Send.
Step 2: Choose the friends who can see your moments
When I update my Moments, I can decide who gets to see them. I can choose specific friends or select a group of friends to share my Moments with.
- To start, head over to Discover and click on Moments.
- When you’re there, find the Camera icon in the top right corner and choose whether to Take a Photo or Choose a Photo from your device.
- Next, click on Share to… and select My Groups on the Sharing page.
- Now, select New group… and check the names of the friends you want to share the photo update with.
- After that, click on Name and give your Group a name. Once you’re done, hit Save. Finally, press Done.
- Return to the Sharing Page and make sure to check your newly created group. Then, go back to your Moments update page.
- Complete your Moments update and click Send.
3. Decide who you don’t want to share moments with
If there are some people in your life that you don’t want to share certain Moments with, you can choose not to share with them. Here’s how:
- To start, open the WeChat app and go to the main page. Look for the navicon, usually located in the bottom right corner of the screen, and tap on it. From the menu that appears, select Settings.
- Once you’re in the Settings menu, find and tap on Privacy. This is where you can control who sees your Moments.
- In the Privacy settings, you’ll see an option called Don’t Share my Moments. Tap on it.
- Now, if there are certain friends that you don’t want to see your Moments, you can customize this by tapping on the + sign. This will open a list of your friends, and you can select the ones you want to exclude. Once you’ve made your selection, tap on OK.
- After you’ve finished selecting friends, tap on Done. This will save your changes and return you to the Privacy settings page.
4. Mention friends in your moments photo update
Similar to how you can tag friends on Facebook, you can also mention friends in the photo updates you share in Moments. This allows you to give a shout-out to specific people or let others know who is in the picture.
To get started, go to Discover and then click on Moments. You’ll see a Camera icon at the top right – give it a tap.
Do you want to take a brand new photo? Choose Take Photo. Or maybe you want to share a photo you already have on your device? Pick Choose Photo instead.
On the status page, you’ll find an option called Mention. Just click on it and then tick off the friends you want to tag. Once that’s done, simply hit Send and your Moments will be updated.
5. In group chats, quickly mention someone by using @
When you’re chatting in a group, typing the @ symbol will bring up a handy list of your friends who are also in the same chat. It makes it super easy to mention someone – just find their name in the list and click on it.
- When you’re in a group chat, type @ in the message box.
- A new window will pop up asking you to choose which friend you want to tag. Just click on their name to select them.
6. How to find all the photos you shared with a friend
There’s a neat trick to find photos that you and a friend have shared together. Imagine it as an album or a picture gallery that’s organized based on who you shared the photos with. Here’s how you can do it:
- Join the chat room you have with your friend and check for any recent photos. Tap to open.
- Slide left or slide right to move between photos and view all the pictures you and your friend have shared. Alternatively, you can tap the icon at the bottom right to see the entire album.
7. Make confetti appear with certain words
If you haven’t seen it already, certain words you use in chats can make confetti fall from the top of your chat screen in the chat room. Everyone in the chat room will be able to see the confetti when someone types a specific word that triggers it.
Here are some of the words you can use to trigger the confetti in a chat room. Just remember that some of these words have specific time periods and might expire.
- Happy New Year
- Merry Christmas
- Happy Easter
- Train
- Money
- Birthday
- Miss You
- Flower
8. Turning off the ability to find me by my phone number
If you want to stop people who have your phone number saved in their contacts from finding you on WeChat, you can disable this feature. Here’s how you do it:
- Hey there! When I open the WeChat app, I tap on the little menu icon and select “Settings.” It’s right there on the main page.
- Once in the settings, I tap on “Privacy,” and then I tap on “Find Me by Phone Number” to turn it off.
9. Want to silence those chat notifications?
No problem! Here’s what you do:
- I open any chat and tap on the little info icon at the top right.
- Then, I look for “Notifications” and tap on it to turn it off.
Alternatively, you can choose when you want to receive these notifications (check out the next tip).
Step 10: Customize your notification timing
Did you know that you can control when you receive WeChat notifications? It’s true! WeChat gives you the power to set specific times when you want to activate or deactivate your notifications. This feature is especially handy when you need some peace and quiet at the office or when you’re catching some Z’s.
- To get started, open the WeChat app and go to the main page.
- Next, tap on the menu icon (the one with the three horizontal lines) and navigate to “Settings”.
- In the Settings menu, find and tap on “Notifications” and then select “Notification Timing”.
- Now, you’ll see an option that says “All Day”. Tap on it to disable notifications for the entire day.
- To set a specific start time for your notifications, tap on “Start” and choose the time that works best for you. Don’t forget to tap on “Done” to save your selection.
- Finally, select “End” to set the time when you want to stop receiving notifications. Once again, tap on “Done” to save your changes.
