10 Habits That Help Cultivate an Inventive Mind
When it comes to creativity, the ability to make connections that others overlook is key. But being innovative means going a step further, envisioning something entirely new and unexplored. Whether you’re inventing a groundbreaking product or finding solutions to complex problems, innovativeness relies on the capacity to link abstract ideas and existing knowledge, ultimately generating something truly exceptional and one-of-a-kind.
Now, I understand that we’re all wired differently, and some of us are naturally inclined towards innovation and creativity. However, this does not mean that the rest of us can’t push the envelope and unleash our own creative potential.
As Thomas Edison said, “There’s work to be done day in and day out” before we can have that brilliant idea.
Genius is only 1% inspiration and 99% hard work. That means a genius is often just a talented person who has done all of their homework. – Thomas A. Edison
Whether you’re trying to improve your creative skills for your freelance work or personal growth, it’s never too late to start.

1. Stay Curious
I am constantly amazed by the most creative individuals on this planet. They possess an insatiable curiosity that sets them apart from the rest of us. The innovators among us have an uncanny knack for asking thought-provoking questions, often about things that most people take for granted. They have an innate desire to make things better, constantly seeking ways to improve upon the status quo. Unlike the majority of us, innovators thrive on challenging what is widely accepted as normal or standard.
Instead of relying on preconceived notions and assumptions, these trailblazers embrace new experiences and ideas with open minds. They have a remarkable ability to see the world from different angles and perspectives.
To embrace a child-like attitude of curiosity, it’s important to consciously question everything around you. Take the first step by making an effort to ponder and explore the wonders of the world. The Internet and Wikipedia are valuable tools that provide a vast wealth of knowledge, so there’s no excuse for not seeking the answers you seek.
Additionally, engaging in conversations with diverse individuals can offer valuable insights. By actively listening to their unique perspectives on life and the world, we can gain a deeper understanding and expand our own thinking. Sometimes, the most enlightening moments arise from interactions with people who have opposing viewpoints to our own.
2. Write Down Your Ideas and Thoughts
If you want to capture and organize your ideas and thoughts, you should try jotting down everything that comes to your head. This includes random words, phrases, and even doodles. It’s a good idea to link your random thoughts together to see what your subconscious is trying to tell you.
Remember, being creative means associating different ideas and facts. So, as you write in your journal or scrapbook, don’t hold back. Even if an idea seems absurd, it could be an important piece to the puzzle of your inner world that might lead to an inspiring breakthrough.
3. Go on Adventures
If you keep doing the same old things, your mind gets stuck and you can’t see things differently. To think in new and exciting ways, you have to step out of your comfort zone and look at things from a different angle.
Actually, the people who come up with the coolest ideas are the ones who learn from different areas and put them together to make something amazing. Look at Steve Jobs, for example. He changed the world of technology by making things look good and easy to use.
Some of you might think that going on adventures means doing something really big, like traveling to a faraway place to see the Northern Lights or climbing Mount Everest. But it doesn’t have to be that way. All you have to do is try new things to get your mind and senses working.
4. Discover the Power of Mindfulness
Let’s explore a fascinating concept in psychology called ‘mindfulness.’ It’s all about being aware of our thoughts, emotions, physical sensations, and the world around us, without judging them. In other words, it’s about paying attention to what’s happening right now and accepting it with open arms.
When I practice mindfulness, I make a deliberate choice to stay focused on the present moment. I don’t let my mind wander from one thought to another. This simple act of staying present not only brings me joy, but it also declutters my mind, making room for fresh ideas and creative breakthroughs.
When I eat, I savor every bite and truly appreciate the flavors. And when I’m listening to someone, I make sure to maintain eye contact and really listen to what they have to say. It’s amazing how much you can notice when you start paying attention to the subtle things around you. There are ideas for expansion everywhere, just waiting to be discovered.
5. Take Risks & Make Mistakes
One thing that sets innovators apart is that they aren’t afraid to take risks and make mistakes. Take Thomas Edison, for example. He didn’t let failure stop him; instead, he saw it as part of the learning process. He kept experimenting with his ideas, using his mistakes as opportunities to perfect his innovations. And that’s how true innovators think.
Alright, it’s time to step out of your comfort zone and embrace the unknown. Are you ready to embark on a journey of discovery and growth? I’m here to cheer you on, so let’s dive right into the excitement!
Don’t let fear hold you back. Confront your fears head-on and use them as an opportunity to practice overcoming your fear of making mistakes.
It’s important to get feedback on your ideas, so make sure to share and present your ideas to people you meet. Don’t be afraid to speak up, even if your ideas are still in the early stages.
Of course, there will always be people who don’t understand your ideas or might even laugh at them. But now that you know that mistakes and rejections are a natural part of innovation, you can take these criticisms in stride and use them to improve your ideas.
Even if no one has anything positive to say about your ideas, simply talking about them can spark your creativity and potentially provide you with new insights.
7. Never Give Up
Be prepared to persevere in your pursuit, no matter how many people try to dissuade you. It is inevitable that you will encounter setbacks and failures as you experiment with various ideas that may not initially succeed.
Dealing with challenges can sometimes feel overwhelming, but it’s crucial to not lose faith and stay focused. You might hear people dismiss this as naive optimism or unrealistic idealism, but innovative thinkers like Thomas Edison had to try and fail countless times before they succeeded in creating the light bulb.
Persistence means continuing to pursue your goals because you believe in them. Take the time to write down what you want to achieve and look at that list every day to remind yourself why you’re persisting. There must be a deep-seated motivation behind your pursuit of this particular goal.
Identify that motivation and imagine the moment when you finally achieve what you’re after. It might seem silly or cliché, but repeating positive affirmations every day can help boost your morale and keep your spirits high, even when setbacks occur.
When you’re laser-focused on your goal, it’s easy to lose track of time and drain your creativity. But taking a step back from the task at hand can actually help you see things in a new light.
So, remember to give yourself regular breaks and allow your mind to relax. Whether it’s taking a walk, showering, exercising, or simply daydreaming, find ways to connect with your subconscious. These moments of solitude can be the perfect breeding ground for inspiration to strike.
To spark your imagination even further, try creating psychological distances through your imagination. Let your mind wander and imagine different scenarios or perspectives. This can help you approach problems with fresh eyes and come up with innovative solutions.
When I’m working on my innovation project, I’ve discovered that it’s beneficial to take breaks and distance myself from it from time to time. But it’s not just physical separation that helps; creating a state of ‘psychological distance’ can also be beneficial.
Psychological distance refers to how we think about things that don’t feel like they’re happening right here, right now, or to us personally. It’s like looking at the problem from a different perspective, adopting someone else’s point of view, or asking hypothetical questions that seem unreal and unfamiliar. By doing this, it makes me think about the bigger picture and encourages me to think more abstractly. It’s amazing how this can help me come up with unique ideas and make connections that I wouldn’t have thought of otherwise.
10. Building on Existing Ideas: Unleashing Innovation
When it comes to innovation, the secret lies not in starting from scratch, but in building upon what already exists. Believe it or not, many of the groundbreaking products we have today are the result of combining different ideas and concepts. Take your smartphone, for instance. It’s not just a regular mobile phone; it’s a powerful device that seamlessly integrates advanced computing capabilities and internet connectivity.
So, what does it take to be a true innovator? Well, it starts with being open to a wide range of ideas. By embracing various possibilities, we create the opportunity to identify patterns and connections between them. And once we’ve gathered these valuable insights, we can then fuse them together to create an innovation that surpasses anything that came before.
If you want to create something new, it’s important to stay in the loop and keep up with the latest tools and technologies that relate to what you’re working on. Stay informed by reading up on relevant materials and getting involved in online communities and discussions with others who have similar interests.
By fully understanding the field you’re interested in innovating in, you’ll have a better sense of what’s possible and be more skilled at blending different ideas together.
