When it comes to media viewing, YouTube is more than just a platform – it’s a treasure trove of exciting features! In a previous post, I shared some fundamental tips to help you make the most out of your YouTube experience.
Today, I want to take it a step further and share even more incredible tips that will revolutionize the way you enjoy videos on YouTube. Whether you’re a viewer or a content creator, these tips are sure to elevate your experience. So, let’s dive right in!
10 Chrome Extensions to Enhance Your YouTube Viewing Experience
YouTube is a hub of innovation, and you can learn so much from the videos available on this platform, all for free. But before we get into that, let’s explore some fantastic Chrome extensions that can take your YouTube experience to new heights. Ready? Let’s go!
1. Bid Farewell to Video Annotations
Annotations are those little boxes that pop up on top of YouTube videos. They’re supposed to make things more interesting by showing you extra information or links related to the video. They can be helpful for the person who uploaded the video, but sometimes they can get pretty annoying for us viewers.
The good news is, you can actually turn off annotations for all YouTube videos! Just follow these simple steps: Click on your profile picture, then click on the gear icon for YouTube Settings. On the left side of the screen, select Playback and uncheck the box that says “Annotations and Interactivity.” That’s it! Easy peasy.
And here’s a bonus tip: if you disable annotations, you’ll also get rid of those pesky channel promotions and interactive cards that show up during videos.
Now, let’s move on to the next tip. This one’s all about buffering. Ever get frustrated when a video keeps pausing to load? Well, you can actually force YouTube to buffer the entire video before you start watching. Here’s how: Click on your profile picture, then go to Quality. Under “Auto,” select a specific video quality. This might take a little longer to load, but once it does, you’ll have smooth sailing and no more interruptions.
So there you have it, a couple of tips to enhance your YouTube experience. Happy watching!
Have you ever noticed that when you pause a video on YouTube, it takes a while to start playing again? That’s because YouTube only buffers 30 seconds of the video when it’s paused, and if your internet connection is slow, it can cause a lag.
To fix this issue, you can make YouTube buffer the entire video before playing it. There’s a cool Chrome extension called SmartVideo for YouTube that can do this for you. After installing the extension, you’ll see a new option at the bottom of the video. Just click on “Global Preferences” and check the box for “Smart Buffer.” It’s super easy!
If you’re using Firefox instead of Chrome, don’t worry. There’s a similar add-on called YouTube Control Center that offers the same options as the Chrome extension. So you have choices!
What about disabling autoplay?
When you open a video on YouTube, it can be quite annoying when it starts playing automatically. I know this because it happens to me too.
But don’t worry, there is a way to disable autoplay videos on YouTube. You can use either the YouTube Control Center Add-on for Firefox or the Disable Autoplay for YouTube extension for Chrome.
These tools give you some options to control YouTube videos. You just need to install the Add-on or extension, and then find the setting that says “Autoplay video when the player loads.” Make sure this option is unchecked, and voila! Autoplay is disabled.
If you prefer, you can also try the Stop Autoplay extension for Chrome. It does the same thing. Simply install it from the chrome://extensions/ page and activate it, and autoplay will be a thing of the past.
4. Add a watermark or logo
Did you know that you can add your own logo or brand watermark to your YouTube videos? It’s a great way to promote your channel, company, or organization. Let me show you how to do it.
First, sign in to your YouTube account and click on the Creator Studio button.
Next, go to CHANNEL > Branding > Add a watermark.
Click on the Choose File Button to upload your logo or brand image. Then, click Save and Update.
Once you’ve added the watermark, it will appear in all of your uploaded videos. You only need to set it up once!
5. Turn a YouTube Video into a GIF
Did you know that you can turn a portion of a YouTube video into a fun GIF file? Here’s how!
Let’s say you have a video you want to create a GIF from. Simply follow the steps below:
All you gotta do is stick in the word “gif” before “YouTube”. This will magically transport you to another website where you can create your very own GIF file! Oh, the power! You get to choose when your GIF starts, how long it lasts, and even add a cool title and caption. It’s like being a GIF master!
If you’d like to create a GIF from a YouTube video, there are a couple of ways to do it. Here’s one option: go to the gifyoutube site and paste the link to the video you want to turn into a GIF. Customize the section of the video you want to include in the GIF, then click on the “CREATE GIF” button to generate your file.
6. Adding subtitles and closed captions
Did you know that you can contribute subtitles and closed captions to videos that were not uploaded by you? Some channels allow viewers to contribute subtitles, so if you enjoy translating or find incorrect subtitles frustrating, here’s how you can help:
If a video doesn’t have subtitles, you can go to “Settings > Subtitles/CC > Add subtitles” and choose the language you’d like to contribute in. Type your translation into the box and click “Submit contribution” to contribute your subtitles.
If you want others to work on the subtitles for this video, choose “No – Let others keep working on them.” If you think the subtitles are already good and just need to be reviewed, choose “Yes – They’re ready to be reviewed.” Then click “Submit.”
If the video already has subtitles or closed captions, go to “Settings > Subtitles/CC > Add subtitles” and select the video’s language. When you reach the part where you want to add a caption, type it into the box. When you’re finished, click “Submit contribution” and then click “Submit.”
When you submit your subtitles and they’re approved, they’ll replace the old ones.
7. YouTube TV Mode for big screens
Hey there! Have you ever wanted to watch your favorite YouTube videos on your big, comfy TV while munching on some delicious popcorn? Well, YouTube TV has got you covered!
The only downside is that watching YouTube on a TV can be a bit tricky. You can’t just use a mouse to click on things like you would on a computer. Instead, you have to navigate through the videos using your keyboard, letter by letter, just like in the old video arcade games.
Ain’t nobody got time for that! Forget about all the hassle and just pair your smartphone with your smart TV using this awesome interface. With this setup, you can use your smartphone to control everything – from choosing videos to pausing them and much more.
8. Discover Powerful Search and Filter Features
Did you know that YouTube has a collection of powerful search and filter tools that can help you find the perfect video? When you enter a search term and click on one of the suggested options, you’ll see a list of results. Look for the Filters button in the top left corner and click on it to access an array of search options.
You have options to filter your search – by upload date, type, duration, features, or sort order – depending on what you need.
If you want to search for a video with specific filtering criteria, it’s easy. Just separate the search phrase and filtering criteria using a comma. For example, if you want to find a video about computer basics that is shorter than 4 minutes, type in “basics of computer, Duration, Short” and click the search button.
Here’s another handy trick: let’s say you found a video you want to share, but you only want to show a specific part, not the whole thing. You can embed just a portion of the video by specifying a start and stop time.
To share and embed a YouTube video, follow these steps:
- Click on the “Share” button located below the video player.
- Choose the “Embed” option from the menu.
- Locate the YouTube video link and add ?start=ss&end=ss at the end.
- Replace ss with the desired time in seconds.
- Use start=ss to specify the starting time and end=ss to specify the ending time.
For example, if you want the video to start at 0:11, you would use ?start=11 in the YouTube video link.
Below is an example of an original embed code:
I’m going to show you a neat trick on how to share just a specific part of a video. Let’s say you only want to share a snippet that starts at the 11th second and ends at the 20th second. I’ll guide you through the steps:
Step 10: Enhance your video with audio effects
If you’re looking to spice up your YouTube video with a different audio track, it’s easy to do. Just follow these simple steps:
- Head over to your Video Manager page.
- Locate the video you want to edit, and click the arrow next to Edit.
- In the drop-down menu, select Audio > Add or replace audio.
- Choose the option to Add to video.
- Select the audio track you want to use from your library.
- Preview your video with the new music.
- If you’re happy with your selection, click Save.
Keep in mind that you can only add one audio track to each video, so choose wisely!
