I’m Ben Thomson, the COO of FlowState Marketing. At FlowState, we’re all about digital marketing and branding. We’ve got some pretty awesome solutions to help businesses succeed. We specialize in creating custom corporate identity products. Over the years, we’ve had the opportunity to work with more than 300 brands, including some of the big shots in the tech industry and breweries like SendGrid, HomeAdvisor, Blue Moon Brewing Company, Ibotta, Breckenridge Brewery, iHeart Radio, Kenny Chesney’s Blue Chair Bay Rum, and many others. It’s been a wild ride!

How We Got Our Business Started

Let me tell you how FlowState Marketing came to be. It all started with Belong Designs, a cool brand that believed in following your passion and doing what you love. We wanted to create a lifestyle brand that would help people find where they belong.

You see, all three of us founders were really passionate about our work. We wanted to build a life around doing what we love, and we thought, why not start with athleisure wear? We knew that t-shirts were a great way to spread our motto, so we designed a fabric that was soft, durable, and perfect for printing on. It didn’t get sweaty and stayed wrinkle-free, so people really loved it.

Before we knew it, other companies wanted to put their logos on our awesome designs. But we didn’t want to mix up the branding with Belong, so we came up with a solution. In early 2016, we launched FlowState Marketing as a separate entity. We quickly turned into a digital and branding agency, creating amazing designs and branding solutions for businesses to succeed.

So that’s how it all happened! FlowState Marketing started from our love for following our passion and grew into something much bigger. We’re here to help businesses thrive with our creative ideas and designs.

A Major Achievement

I want to share with you one of the biggest victories I’ve had: my decision to pursue my business full-time.

From the very beginning, I knew that someday I wanted to be able to focus solely on my business, without any other distractions. I couldn’t wait for the day when I could hire my first employee and fully dedicate myself to growing my brand, FlowState.

For two years, after finishing work in my engineering job, I would head down to the basement and continue working on my dream. Day after day, I poured my heart and soul into making FlowState a success.

Then, something amazing happened. After carefully assessing our accounts, finances, and confirmed projects, I realized that our growth was being held back by one thing: time. There simply weren’t enough hours in the day to do everything we wanted.

That’s when it hit me. I made the bold decision to give my employers eight months’ notice and continue working both jobs until I could go full-time with FlowState. It wasn’t easy, but in early 2016, I finally reached that point.

From that day forward, if there was more work than our team could handle in one day, I knew it was time to bring someone else on board. We were ready to expand and grow together.

Looking back, I’m incredibly proud of how far we’ve come. It all started with a dream and a lot of hard work. And now, thanks to our perseverance and determination, we’re living that dream every single day. -BT

Let me tell you about the importance of sales.

Here’s what happened: We decided to hire a friend to help us with sales. We paid them 2.5 times more than what we were making ourselves. It was really tough for the first 12 months. We had a small team of five people, and we struggled with payroll. We almost had to let our sales lead go, but after many difficult conversations, we decided to keep our friend on board. And you know what? That decision turned out to be a game-changer. Our sales lead ended up closing some really big deals and eventually became the Director of Sales at FlowState. This experience taught us the importance of giving sales enough time to grow. We also learned that offering a sustainable base salary plus commission can be a great incentive for salespeople.

If I had an extra $100,000, here’s how I would spend it:

I would focus on growing our team. Hiring more employees would allow us to improve our company’s already amazing culture. We would also be able to offer more perks to our employees. And let’s not forget about the office space. We’ve been growing so fast that we’ve outgrown our current space. So, I would definitely consider getting a bigger office for our staff! – SM
