How to Back Up iPhone Text Messages to Your Computer

By Ronald Smith

Unlike emails that are stored in the cloud, text messages (SMS) are saved on your iPhone. If anything were to happen to your phone, you would lose those precious messages forever. Unfortunately, because iOS is a closed system, you can’t find an app that backs up and restores deleted text messages for you.

Today, I’m going to show you how to safely back up your iPhone data and locate the special file where all your text message data is stored. With this file, you can create a copy in a safer place or even view the messages within the file using a website.

Proper iPhone Backup with iTunes

Did you know that you can back up your iPhone using iCloud? Well, here’s the thing: when you back up your phone with iCloud, it won’t save the file you need to access on your computer.

So, what should you do? The first step is to make sure your iPhone is backed up to this computer. If it was previously backed up to iCloud, just switch that option to “This computer” and hit the Back Up Now button.

Once I finish backing up my iPhone, I’ll show you how to find the file that contains all the SMS data.

Finding the Backup File for iPhone SMS

After the backup is saved on my computer, I need to locate a file with the name 3d0d7e5fb2ce288813306e4d4636395e047a3d28. Depending on the operating system version, this file should be in different locations.

For Windows XP or lower

The file should be found at: OS hard drive > Documents and Settings > [your username] > Application Data > Apple Computer > MobileSync > Backup.

For Windows 7 or 8

The file should be found at: OS hard drive > Users > [your username] > AppData > Roaming > Apple Computer > MobileSync > Backup.

For Mac OS X

The file should be found at: User > Library > Application Support > MobileSync > Backup.

So, here’s what you need to do: look inside that folder and find a file called 3d0d7e5fb2ce288813306e4d4636395e047a3d28. This file is where all your SMS messages are stored, so make sure to copy it and save it somewhere safe.

Now, let’s talk about how to view the backup file.

There’s a cool website that you can visit to upload your SMS file. Once you’re there, you can choose to export it to Microsoft Office Excel, HTML, or PDF. It’s up to you!

Once the file is uploaded and exported, you’ll be able to see all your sent and received messages. They’ll be listed with the contact number and the message content. The list is organized from newest to oldest, so you can easily find what you’re looking for.

So, in a nutshell, that’s how you can access and view your SMS messages. Give it a try and see what you find!

That’s it!
