How to Automatically Transcribe YouTube Videos

By Ronald Smith

Did you know that YouTube has some pretty cool features? I’m talking about things like translation for titles and descriptions, and even keyboard shortcuts that make browsing a lot easier. But here’s something you might not know: you can also transcribe YouTube videos. And guess what? It’s not as complicated as it sounds! Thanks to advancements in speech recognition technology, you can now get a reliable automatic transcription with just a few simple steps.

So, how does it all work? Well, when you upload a video to YouTube, it automatically transcribes most of the content for you. This means you don’t have to do any extra work. But what if you want to edit the transcription or have it in a different format? Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered! In this post, I’ll show you two easy ways to get YouTube video transcriptions for free.

Keep Your YouTube Videos Private with ShareTube

Hey there! I have some exciting news for you. Unfortunately, ShareTube is no longer available. I bet you know a lot about YouTube, but have you heard about ShareTube? Let me give you the lowdown.

Method #1: Copy/Paste YouTube transcript

Did you know that most YouTube videos have automatic transcripts created with Google’s Speech Recognition technology? Cool, right? Sometimes, the video owner even adds their own transcript to share with viewers like you and me.

Now, here comes the best part – you can easily access and copy these transcriptions, complete with timestamps. Here’s how:

  1. First, find the “More” button below the video. Click on it.
  2. Next, select “Transcript” from the menu. It should be there, waiting for you.
  3. How to Automatically Transcribe YouTube Videos

Below, you’ll find instructions on how to transcribe a YouTube video’s subtitles using a simple process. First, select the language you prefer, and once you make your choice, a complete transcript with timestamps will appear.

To copy the text, click and drag to highlight all of it, then press Ctrl + C. This will enable you to paste the transcript anywhere you’d like. With this method, your transcript will be readily available for use.

YouTube aids in the transcription process by automatically highlighting words it may have detected incorrectly. This feature allows for easy editing of the transcript. To access the subtitles, simply click on the CC button in the YouTube player and the subtitles will appear in white. Enjoy the convenience of transcribing YouTube videos effortlessly.

Hey there! Just a heads up: the subtitles with gray color are the ones that might have some mistakes. Thankfully, you can easily fix these by making changes to the transcription when needed. It’s worth mentioning that subtitles uploaded by the video owner won’t have any gray words.

Method #2: Transcribe with Google Doc

The first two methods are great if there’s an automatic or owner-uploaded transcript available for the YouTube video you want to transcribe. But what if there’s no transcript available? Not to worry! You can still transcribe the video using Google Docs’ awesome built-in voice typing feature. This feature listens to the video’s audio and automatically types everything for you.

For a high-quality transcript, it’s a good idea to have your computer directly listen to the audio coming out of its speakers. Here’s how you can make it happen:

How to Automatically Transcribe YouTube Videos

  1. To change your recording device in Windows, follow these steps:
  2. Right-click on the sound icon in the taskbar.
  3. Select “Recording devices”.
  4. From the list of recording devices, choose “Stereo Mix”.
  5. Click on “Set Default” to make it your default recording source.

If your computer doesn’t have the “Stereo Mix” option, you can try an alternative solution:

Download and install the “VB Virtual Audio Cable” tool.

After installing the drivers, you’ll see a new option called “Cable Output” in the sound settings.

Select “Cable Output” and click “Set Default”.

After you’ve done that, your PC will start capturing the sound coming from the speakers in order to record it. All that’s left for you to do is open Google Docs Voice typing and play the necessary video at the same time to begin transcribing.

Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Open Google Docs in Chrome or any other Chromium-based browsers. (Please note that Voice Typing is not supported in non-Chromium browsers.)
  2. Create a new document and go to the Tools menu at the top of the page. Choose “Voice typing”.How to Automatically Transcribe YouTube Videos
  3. A small box will appear with a microphone icon in the center. Simply click on it to start recording.
  4. To transcribe a YouTube video, go to the video tab and click play. Google Docs will automatically type as people speak in the video. How to Automatically Transcribe YouTube Videos

It will take the same amount of time as the video’s duration, but you’ll have an accurate transcript at the end. Google Docs Voice typing supports over 40 languages; just click on the Voice typing box menu to change the language.

The resulting transcript is comparable to YouTube’s automatic captioning, as both use the same Speech Recognition technology.

In conclusion, transcribing YouTube videos is a breeze with Google Docs. Give it a try and save yourself the headache of manual transcription!

I love watching YouTube videos with captions. It’s great because you can turn on the captions and understand everything that’s being said. And let me tell you, YouTube’s automatic captions are really impressive. They hardly ever make mistakes, even when there’s a bit of background noise in the video. It’s pretty amazing how accurate they are.

But hey, if you don’t feel like editing the captions yourself or fixing punctuation, don’t worry. You can always hire a professional to do it for you. There’s a website called Fiverr where you can find people who will transcribe an hour-long video for just $20. It’s a pretty good deal.

Oh, and by the way, if you’re a videographer looking for some high-quality stock videos, I’ve got you covered. I found this list of 10 websites where you can download free stock videos. It’s a great resource for adding some extra pizzazz to your videos. Check it out!
