I was really intrigued by an article on TechCrunch written by a developer named Basel Farag. It’s called Please Don’t Learn to Code, and it brings up some interesting points about why coding courses and bootcamps might not be as great as they seem.

In many ways, I agree with Basel. Not everyone is meant to be an engineer or programmer. It takes a certain kind of person with a specific set of skills and interests.

Just like any other profession, there’s a big difference between dabbling in coding games to learn the basics and actually becoming a professional. It becomes a problem when someone who doesn’t have a deep understanding or enough experience takes on a task they’re not qualified for.

On that point, Basel and I are in complete agreement. But there’s something he said in the first paragraph that I have to disagree with.

Hey, let me tell you something important. I think it’s great for everyone to learn how to code. But you know what? Learning to code doesn’t automatically make you a programmer.

See, there’s a problem with that idea, and I’ll explain why. You see, not everyone actually wants to be a programmer. And that’s perfectly okay.

But here’s the thing. Coding has so many amazing and helpful uses in business and marketing. It’s not just for programmers.

Let me give you an example. Imagine there’s this entrepreneur who’s starting her own company. She’s got some money to hire two programmers. Now, how is she supposed to know if these programmers are any good if she doesn’t understand the basics of what they do?

Wow, can you believe that my whole pay-per-click (PPC) software company started from a program I created to make my own PPC advertising consulting tasks easier?

• Like Steve Jobs famously said, coding teaches you how to think and solve problems.
• When you know how to code, you can do more things on your own online, which is great for startups with limited funds.
• Being able to communicate with programmers and understand their challenges gives you an edge in your business.
• Coding gives you a deeper insight into product development.
• You’ll have a better understanding of the technology-driven world we live in, and how it affects your company.
• Knowing how to code makes it easier to evaluate software and apps for your business, and your opinions carry more weight.
• You might find that creating your own automated solutions could make life easier.

Forget the idea that only computer geniuses and tech experts need to learn how to program—it’s simply not true.

Coding isn’t just a passing trend or a temporary fad. It’s the language that powers much of our world today, from the cool gadgets we wear, to the tools we use at work, to the smart devices in our homes.

Coding is the new form of literacy.
