Back in 2002, I started Smosh.com. You know how the name came about? Well, my friend misunderstood the word ‘Mosh pit’ and there it was – Smosh! And not long after, my good pal Ian Hecox joined me.
We started by making short animations and putting them up on our website. We also uploaded some stuff to Newgrounds, this cool site for animations and flash stuff. But it was hard to get people to check out our site – not many knew about us back then.
Then, YouTube came along in 2005 and everything changed. We thought, Hey, why not make some videos of us lip-syncing to awesome theme songs like ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ and ‘Power Rangers’? At first, we didn’t even plan on posting them online. But our friends thought they were great and convinced us to share them with the world.
When I think of the “Pokemon” theme song, there’s one duo that comes to mind. Their amazing rendition of the song in November 2015 was a huge hit, drawing over 17 million views on YouTube. It was the most viewed video on the platform at that time, making them real superstars of the web! The BBC even recognized their talent and named them among the first to achieve such fame in web TV way back in 2006. Since then, their popularity has soared, and they’ve achieved many milestones.
One of the most significant milestones was when they became the most subscribed YouTube channel in the United States in January 2013. This incredible achievement was based on data from VidStatsX, a well-known metrics site. Even today, Smosh is only outranked by YouTube’s own Spotlight channel!
