Tech entrepreneurs are shaking up the fitness industry in many different ways. They’re creating gadgets that can track steps and other important health information. However, these devices mainly focus on cardio exercises.

But now, Perch is changing the game by offering something similar for strength training exercises. Learn about this exciting new advancement in this week’s Small Business Spotlight.

What Perch Does

Perch provides a cutting-edge fitness device.

As the CEO of Perch, I’m proud to say that our software-enabled gym device uses a combination of camera vision and machine learning to revolutionize your workouts. It helps you reach your athletic goals, while also reducing the risk of injuries.

Picture this: a tiny device, only about a foot long and a few inches wide, that’s super easy to attach to any weight rack. Cool, right? Well, this nifty gadget is made up of a 3D camera and a tablet. Here’s how it works: when an athlete walks up to it, they just log in on the tablet and start lifting. While they’re pumping iron, the 3D camera keeps track of their movements and instantly displays all sorts of important info on the tablet. We’re talking sets, reps, velocity, and even power output! Neat, huh? But wait, there’s more!

Once the workout is done, athletes and coaches can access all the juicy data using a web and mobile app. It’s like having a virtual coach right at your fingertips! And that’s not all – the data is also stored and saved, so we can analyze it later and figure out how to approach future workouts. Talk about putting technology to good use!

So, what’s our business niche? It’s pretty simple, really: we provide instant data. No waiting around, no guessing – just real-time information right on the spot. We’re here to help athletes and coaches take their performance to the next level!

It’s that good. Our mission is to have Perch units in every college and pro sports team facility, as well as fitness centers, home gyms, and performance facilities across the country.

The Origins of the Business

It all started with a sports injury.

Let me tell you my story. I was a student at MIT and also a member of the baseball team. One day, while I was working out in the weight room and doing squats, something went wrong. I injured myself, and it was not a pleasant experience.

The doctors couldn’t figure out exactly why it happened. They had a few theories, but nothing concrete. I wasn’t sure what went wrong either. Maybe it was my form while doing the squats, or perhaps my body was just exhausted from too much physical activity. It could also have been that I wasn’t getting enough restful sleep.

At that point, anyone’s guess was as good as mine. The only thing I knew for sure was that I needed to find a way to prevent this kind of injury from happening again. And that’s how my journey began.

When I was healing from my injury, I began thinking of ways to create a device that could help athletes measure their workouts in the weight room to avoid getting hurt and do better overall. Not long after that, I teamed up with two other athletes at my school – Nate Rodman and Jordan Lucier – and together, we came up with the concept for Perch. For the next few years, we spent entire nights at MIT’s machine shops constructing, designing, and testing various prototypes.

Greatest Achievement

Their first significant accomplishment was securing a major university as a client.

Rothman says, Back in early 2019, my team and I were on the lookout for that one special client, that golden opportunity to showcase our ground-breaking idea. We decided to take a shot by reaching out to various Power Five and other universities, hoping that someone would be willing to take a risk. The first coach to show interest was Tommy Moffitt from LSU, who is in charge of one of the most respected conditioning programs in the country. After a series of conversations, I packed up our product and headed to Baton Rouge, where I presented it to Moffitt and the LSU staff, and granted them the chance to test it out in their weight room for a few weeks.

The Biggest Risk I Face

When I go to trade shows without a product, I’m taking a big risk. It’s a mistake that can easily happen because trade show guests are bombarded with sales pitches from the moment they step on the show floor. It’s overwhelming, and they start losing track of who they’ve talked to and what products they discussed.

You don’t need to have the flashiest booth to attract attendees. What matters is captivating them with your product and bringing it to life. The more real you can make it seem to them, the better. This way, they are more likely to remember you after the show and continue the sales conversation where it left off.

A Valuable Lesson

Let me tell you, doing research on the market is really important. I learned that the hard way.

Here’s the thing: we were in a rush to get our product out there. We wanted to prove that our idea was good, find the right people to invest in it, and hire more talented folks to join our team. And guess what? Our product was a hit! People loved it and couldn’t get enough of it. But here’s the catch: when you start getting a ton of customers, things get tricky. We discovered all sorts of problems. Because our product was still pretty new, this was a big challenge for us.

If I Had Some Extra Cash

You won’t believe what I would do if I had an extra $100,000! I’d hire another software engineer.

Listen, our technology is seriously complex. And we have so many exciting ideas for new features. But we need more hands on deck to turn those ideas into reality.
