Shining a Light: Humanity Communications Collective Adds a Special Touch to Communications Consulting

When it comes to helping businesses share important messages, there are many communications agencies out there. But Humanity Communications Collective takes it a step further. They focus specifically on groups and causes that support social justice initiatives and serve underrepresented communities. Let’s dive into the company’s mission and journey in this week’s Small Business Spotlight.

What Does the Business Do?

Humanity Communications Collective provides communication services to historically underserved groups and causes.

CEO Yanira Castro explained, Humanity Communications Collective is a strategic communications consulting group driven by social justice. We work with communities that have historically been lacking in resources to share their stories and amplify those stories both online and offline.

What Makes the Business Unique?

Humanity Communications Collective fully immerses themselves in their clients’ causes.

I’m Castro and I want to share with you why our team is so special. We come from diverse backgrounds and have different perspectives, which makes us the perfect match for our clients. As a woman of color, I know how important it is to see things from different points of view.

But what sets us apart even more is how we work with our clients. Unlike other communication agencies, we don’t just sit on the sidelines and wait for tasks to be handed to us. We dive deep into our relationships with our clients. We work side by side with them, using our strengths and skills to complement theirs.

The Story Behind Our Business

It all started with a life-changing trip in 2017.

As I reflect on my transformative journey to the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, it becomes clear to me that there is a greater purpose in my storytelling. I realized that I have the power to give a voice to those who are often unheard. In order to wholeheartedly pursue the causes that resonate deeply with me, it was necessary to break free from the constraints of the corporate world.

My Greatest Achievement

Achieving a major victory for a well-known client and reaching a significant milestone.

Let me tell you about the two most memorable wins I had in 2022. Firstly, we had the privilege of representing the Bring Sundiata Acoli Home Alliance. This year, we worked tirelessly to bring justice to Mr. Acoli, who had been unjustly incarcerated since 1973 and unfairly denied parole, which was a violation of New Jersey law. Our team delved deep into the legal proceedings, making sure to highlight the true essence of Mr. Acoli as a person to the world. In January, a state Supreme Court hearing was held, and then in May, we received the incredible news that he would be granted parole and set free. I will never forget that moment: we were all gathered in a Zoom meeting with our client when we heard the news. The room exploded with tears of joy. Just a few weeks later, Mr. Acoli returned home and celebrated his first holidays with his family since 1973.

Wow, I have some exciting news to share with you! First of all, our business has officially hit the $1 million mark in revenue! Can you believe it? Only 4.2% of businesses owned by women reach this milestone, and we did it in just five years. It feels like such a tremendous accomplishment, and I couldn’t be prouder. It just goes to show that with determination and hard work, anything is possible, even in the face of the challenges that women-owned businesses often face.

My Biggest Risk

One of the biggest risks I took was hiring contractors as official employees. It was a decision that came with a lot of responsibility. I knew that by bringing people on board as full-time employees, I was taking on the responsibility of their livelihood. That’s not something I took lightly. But it’s a risk that paid off. It was a leap of faith, knowing that I had to bring in consistent business and keep our clients happy in order to provide job security for my team.

If I Had an Extra $100,000

If I had an extra $100,000, I would do two things: I would save some of it for the future, to ensure the stability and growth of our business. And I would also use some of it to reward my amazing team. They have been with me every step of the way, working hard and contributing to our success. They deserve to be rewarded for their dedication and effort. They are the backbone of this company, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without them.

Our Amazing Team Traditions

We have a lot of cool things we do as a team, whether we’re together in person or connecting virtually.

Let me tell you about it! We are a special team because we work remotely, meaning we don’t all work in the same office. In fact, we got even bigger during the pandemic when we had to work from home. But this hasn’t stopped us from building strong relationships and having a fantastic work culture. And you know what? We’ve come up with some pretty awesome ways to stay engaged and connected.

Let’s start with our monthly post-work virtual events. They are absolutely a blast! At the end of a long day, one of our team members takes charge and leads us in something super fun. It could be a trivia night where we test our knowledge and have a good laugh together. These events bring us closer and make us feel like we’re hanging out, even if we’re miles apart.

I love gathering together with my team whenever we can, whether it’s during client visits or special retreats. It’s so important for us to spend quality time together, building strong relationships and working towards our goals as a company. We understand that doing social justice work requires not only empathy, but also unwavering conviction. There are definitely days when the work feels heavy, but that’s why it’s crucial for us to have fun, laugh, and embrace our humanity.

A Quote I Love

If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything.
