Back in the day, my family didn’t rely on take-out. We gathered around the kitchen and cooked delicious meals together, sharing not just food, but special moments together.
I come from a close-knit Italian family, where the bond was strengthened over food. And now, there’s a renewed interest in cooking at home to strengthen family ties and promote better health.
While this might not be great news for some restaurant owners, it’s a dream come true for me and my husband, Bob. We recently opened a Savory Spice Shop franchise in Raleigh, N.C. This unique store is part of a brand created by Mike and Janet Johnston from Denver, Col. They offer customers an incredible selection of 400 different types of spices and 160 custom blends.
When it comes to our brand, freshness is the most important thing. We cater to people who love using spices in their cooking, like you! We call them foodies.
Here’s the secret: our shop gets spices that are freshly ground in five-pound batches every week. They come all the way from the franchise headquarters in Denver. We make sure to order just what we need, so we don’t have too much left over.
I want to share something with you that I find really fascinating. You know, sometimes the spices we buy in grocery stores have been sitting on the shelves for weeks, and that can make a difference in their quality. It’s something that our customers here at our spice shop really appreciate. It’s funny, people will come up to us and say, I never knew cinnamon was supposed to smell like that! It’s like a revelation for them.
My husband and I aren’t just passionate about cooking and spices, we’re also professionals in this field. When we bought our franchise, we had the amazing opportunity to attend Spice University in Denver. It was a six-week intensive training program where we learned everything there is to know about spices. It was such a valuable experience.
Since then, our business has grown. We now have three full-time employees, including my husband, myself, and a talented manager. We even have four part-time employees, and we’re currently in the process of hiring a fifth member for our team. It’s really exciting to see how far we’ve come.
Running my business goes beyond just knowing how to order the right spices and opening the doors every day to take money at the cash register. It’s about connecting with my customers and constantly learning to help them with their questions.
Let me give you an example. If a customer has been told to avoid salt in their diet, my staff and I will work hard to find suitable alternatives. We might suggest using spices like wasabi or pepper instead.
In addition to that, we also organize cooking classes on a regular basis. Not only do these classes teach valuable skills, but they also help raise funds for a local rescue mission.
As part of our commitment to quality, we offer recipes from our franchise chain to our customers. At the same time, we also send our own recipes from the Raleigh store to the company’s test kitchen in Denver. Who knows, they might be shared with other franchise shops!
When I asked myself why I started my new venture, I had many different answers. For me and my husband, it was clear that necessity was the driving force.
After working in corporate IT for many years, my husband Bob found himself with fewer opportunities after turning 50. With our child still in college and Bob wanting a business that required less travel, we decided to open a Savory Spice Shop.
And it seems like we not only chose the right business model, but also the perfect location.
Raleigh, N.C. is right in the middle of the Research Triangle, a place in the state that’s known for having lots of high tech startups. The area attracts smart and rich people to work here. I also believe that the food culture here has a big part in making our shop successful.
Lastly, I want to mention how the Shop Local Raleigh program has helped us a lot. We were one of the first businesses to join this movement here in Raleigh. And let me tell you, it’s been like a rebirth for us.
