I’ve noticed that it’s becoming harder for small businesses to find employees because there are more and more people looking for jobs. According to a recent survey by Indeed, small businesses are having trouble finding people who have the skills they need, like being a good leader, thinking critically, and solving problems. But that’s not the only challenge they’re facing.
Competition for Small Business Hiring is Increasing
The survey by Indeed shows that small businesses not only have to compete with other small businesses for employees, but they also have to compete with big companies. And the problem is even worse for small businesses because they have fewer resources. For example, the people in charge of hiring at small businesses have to do a lot of other things too, so they can’t spend as much time as they’d like on finding the right candidates.
But let me tell you, something interesting is happening right now while small businesses are thriving and getting bigger. You see, in a recent survey, 36 percent of the people said they expect even more growth in the next year! Isn’t that exciting? And get this, a whopping 56 percent of small businesses hired new team members just last year. Wow!
Now, here’s the catch. As much as we love this growth, there’s a little problem. It’s becoming a real challenge to find the right people for the job. Can you believe it? 24 percent of the small businesses said it’s become even harder to find qualified candidates compared to five years ago. And wait for it, 35 percent said it’s just as difficult. Can you imagine the struggle?
In April 2018, I conducted an online survey of small business owners in the US. These owners were randomly selected and represent companies with 1-249 employees.
What the Skills Data Shows
When asked about finding candidates with leadership skills, more than half of respondents (56%) said it was either very difficult (18%) or somewhat difficult (38%). The numbers for critical thinking and problem-solving skills didn’t fare much better, coming in at 55% and 51% respectively.
However, there is a silver lining in this data. Skills like communications and teamwork are easier to hire for, according to the survey. And when it comes to candidates with the right certifications and education, 54% said it’s not that difficult, with 22% stating it’s not difficult at all.
How Small Businesses are Competing
When it comes to small businesses, a whopping 37 percent of them believe that the biggest challenge they face is money. They need to find a way to attract the best candidates to work for them, and one strategy that some businesses employ is offering higher wages. Unfortunately, not all small businesses have the resources to do this. So, they have to get creative with the perks they offer to entice talented individuals.
One option is to provide opportunities for growth and promotion within the company. This way, employees can see a future for themselves within the organization and be motivated to work harder. In fact, 21 percent of small businesses choose this path as a way to compete.
Another option is to be generous with vacation policies. By offering employees more time off, businesses show that they value work-life balance and understand the importance of rest and rejuvenation. This approach is taken by 18 percent of small businesses, allowing them to stand out and attract top talent.
According to Indeed’s official company blog, small businesses have a special advantage over their larger counterparts: their size. They say, It’s not easy to create a feeling of togetherness at work, but many people looking for jobs nowadays want real connections with other people. In a smaller business, the team is usually closer and everyone has multiple roles, just like the owners. This means employees get the chance to work on different projects that might not be part of their usual job, and they can learn a variety of skills.
Where do the new employees come from?
Did you know that most businesses find new hires through recommendations or word of mouth? It’s true! In fact, 57% of the people we asked said that’s how they found their employees. That’s a lot of people spreading the word about good workers. But that’s not the only way businesses find new talent. Social media ads have been successful for 31% of businesses, while online job boards have worked for 28%. And believe it or not, even ads in newspapers have helped 12% of businesses find new hires. Some small businesses have even had luck with signs in their windows, attracting talented individuals for 9% of them. It just goes to show that there are many different ways to find the right people for the job!
