I can’t believe how much the internet and smartphones have changed the way businesses connect with people. It’s pretty amazing how quickly a small business can become a big success with the help of social media and mobile apps. This is especially true for industries like hotels and entertainment, where word-of-mouth is so important.

There’s this company called SnapLion that’s doing some really cool stuff. They help nightclubs, restaurants, musicians, art galleries, sports teams, and real estate agents make their own iPhone and Android apps. And the best part is, it’s super easy and cheap! They have this platform that lets you design and build your own app without needing any coding skills.

It’s really catching on, especially with nightclub owners. They’re making these awesome apps that customers can use to find out about upcoming events, buy tickets, and even get special discounts. And the customers love it! They can stay connected with their favorite clubs and find out all the latest information right on their phones.

In 2011, I, Nikhil Sama, founded SnapLion. I started this company with my three friends, Tapan Raj, Rohan Gupta, and Aditya Kapoor. Before SnapLion, I had various experiences in the tech industry. I was a Director at Rocket Internet, an early stage technology fund. I also worked as a strategy consultant at Bain in Chicago and as a software developer at Cisco and HP.

Let me tell you a bit about my educational background. I have an MBA from the University of Chicago, a master’s degree in Computer Science from the University of Southern California (USC), and a master’s degree in Electronics Engineering from Delhi College of Engineering.

Now, let’s talk about my friend Rohan. He’s an expert in UI, UX, and New Media studies. He studied at the Academy of Art College in San Francisco and majored in Computer Science at St. Stephen’s College in New Delhi.

The Beginning of SnapLion: The Early Days

When I was trying to build an app for my music band, ‘Midival Punditz’, I faced a big problem. It was difficult, expensive, and time-consuming to get an app built for musicians. I felt disappointed and frustrated. That’s when I decided to reach out to my friends, Nikhil and Rohan. We came up with a solution – a platform called SnapLion that allows you to easily create your own app.

Before we knew it, SnapLion became popular not just among musicians, but also among restaurants, nightclubs, and other businesses. Some of our notable customers include Buddha Bar, musician Anoushka Shankar, Hotel Radisson Blu, and Smokin’ Joes Pizza, which has over 90 locations in India. What makes SnapLion unique is that you don’t need any coding skills. With just photos, videos, text, menus, promotions, and other content, you can create your own app in less than an hour.

But they were also super expensive, starting at $500 per month. Ouch! But SnapLion saw an opportunity. They wanted to offer a similar service but at a more affordable price.

So, at the lower end of the market, SnapLion’s competition included other companies like MobileConduit, iBuildApps.com, and AppMakker.com. These companies also made apps, but SnapLion wanted to stand out by being accessible to everyone.

When I developed a special app for a popular restobar in Pune called High Spirits, it ended up being a huge success. This app, which was available for both iPhones and Androids, brought in 10 times the amount of money it cost to create every month! It did this by sending out push notifications to customers about all the awesome deals, offers, celebrations, and happy hours happening at the bar. Surprisingly, these notifications were responsible for a whopping 71% more people coming to the bar. Not only that, but the app also made it super easy for customers to make reservations, receive alerts when they were close to the restobar, and even earn loyalty points for being regulars. One of the coolest features of the app was the fan wall, where customers could interact with each other and the restobar by leaving comments, sharing pictures, and more. It was a great way for High Spirits to connect with their loyal customers!

In 2011, the National Restaurant Industry (NRA) Restaurant Industry Forecast found that people who are good with social media are more involved in the restaurant and bar community than most people. It’s predicted that by 2013, more than half of restaurant and bar owners will start using social media to connect with these customers.

A study by eMarketer discovered that 89% of restaurants started using social media in 2013, which is an increase from 77% in 2012. Over 50% of these restaurants had a website optimized for mobile devices, and nearly 30% had their own mobile app. The study also shows that mobile marketing, which relies on location-based technology, is becoming even more important for restaurants and bars. This industry relies heavily on trends, and more and more businesses within it are using social media and the mobile web.
