The UPS Inside Small Business Survey has found that 41% of small business owners have made changes to their businesses due to COVID-19. I find this information fascinating and somewhat surprising. Over 330 entrepreneurs were surveyed to better understand how small businesses have adapted and shown resilience in the face of the pandemic.

When the pandemic hit, many businesses were forced to close their doors temporarily. This, along with a decrease in demand and concerns about the health of their employees, initially created chaos. However, not all business owners were discouraged by these challenges. In fact, some saw them as opportunities to make changes and find new ways to succeed in these uncertain times.

So, here’s the deal, folks. I’ve got some important findings to share with you. It turns out that when the coronavirus hit, small businesses really stepped up their game. They didn’t waste any time in making changes to adapt to the new challenges. They knew that staying connected with their customers was key, so they started communicating more and being transparent. And you know what? It worked! They were able to build and maintain loyalty.

But wait, there’s more! They didn’t stop there. These savvy business owners also turned to technology to tackle the crisis head-on. They saw an opportunity in the midst of all the chaos. For example, a whopping 65% of businesses started doing more online business. Pretty smart move, right? And get this, 34% of them started sending products to their customers instead of doing face-to-face deliveries. That’s thinking outside the box. And guess what else? About 28% of them shifted their focus to e-commerce. Talk about adapting to the times! And finally, 15% of businesses started offering curbside deliveries to address the health concerns of their customers. Way to go!

So, I decided to make some changes to my workspace and start working from home. It was a bit scary at first, but it actually turned out to be a good thing. Not only did it help me feel safer from getting infected, but it also helped me stay productive.

The Challenges I Faced and How I Dealt with them

Even though there were some positive things about working from home, I still had worries about the future. But, things have gotten a little better since the first time I checked in March. The percentage of people feeling anxious has dropped to 40% from 56%.

And you know what? I’ve also noticed that there’s been more optimism lately. It’s gone up by almost a third to 47% from 38% in mid-March. It’s important to mention that back then, 92% of us admitted that COVID-19 had affected our businesses in some way.

So, what exactly stresses us out? According to the survey, heavy workloads take the top spot at 15%. We’re always juggling multiple tasks and responsibilities, which can feel overwhelming at times. Next up are long working hours, coming in at 12%. We pour our hearts and souls into our businesses, often sacrificing our personal time. And who can forget about those dreaded tight deadlines? They account for 11% of the stress load. It’s no wonder we feel a bit frazzled!

But here’s the amazing part: despite all the stress, 60% of small business owners say the best way to deal with it is to simply keep plugging away. Now, that’s what I call resilience! We know how to roll up our sleeves and push through the tough times.

Of course, there are other strategies we employ to tackle stress. Prioritizing tasks and responsibilities is a popular approach, with 44% of us embracing this method. By figuring out what needs to be done first, we can conquer our to-do lists one step at a time. And let’s not forget about problem-solving. 39% of small business owners believe that finding a solution is key to reducing our stress levels. When faced with a challenge, we won’t rest until we’ve come up with a plan.

Now, here’s where we really stand out. The survey found that small businesses like ours have proven to be quite adaptable. When compared to larger businesses, we’ve been able to pivot more easily. Why? Well, it’s all thanks to our size. We have the advantage of being nimble and agile. When the pandemic hit, we swiftly transitioned to remote work and implemented new operation procedures. And guess what? We were successful in retaining much of our workforce. Go us!

In order for a business to stay strong, it has to stay focused, productive, and full of energy. To do this, I need to look inside myself and find my own strengths to overcome challenges. The secret to this is helping my team adapt to change and keep moving forward so we can succeed and thrive.

During tough times, it’s crucial to stay connected and not see obstacles as impossible to overcome. By having an honest conversation about the current situation and accepting that change is a part of our work, we can better understand where we stand.
