A Fresh Range of Domain Names Offers Options Beyond .Com

By Ronald Smith

I want to tell you about an exciting new development in the world of website addresses. It’s called a domain name, and it’s the unique name that identifies a website on the internet. You may be familiar with the most common domain name, .com. However, there’s a whole new class of domain names that provides interesting alternatives, giving you more options to choose from.

Imagine you’re starting a website for your business or personal use. In the past, the top-level domain .com was often the default choice. But now, you have a range of options that can better reflect your brand, niche, or interests. These new domain names allow you to be more creative and stand out in the crowded online space.

For example, instead of using a .com domain, you could choose a domain that ends with .design, .blog, or .shop. These options can immediately convey the purpose or nature of your website. Let’s say you’re an artist – a domain ending with .art would be a perfect fit. Or if you’re passionate about sustainable living, a domain like .eco would be a great choice to showcase your values.

Choosing a domain name that aligns with your goals, passion, or industry can help you connect with the right audience and attract like-minded individuals. With this new range of domain names, you have the opportunity to create a web address that is memorable and meaningful.

Moreover, these alternative domain names are becoming increasingly popular, so you won’t be alone in embracing them. Major companies, organizations, and individuals are already adopting these new options, making them a valuable tool in staying ahead of the curve.

In conclusion, the internet landscape is evolving, and so are the options for choosing a domain name. Embrace this new class of domain names, and explore the possibilities beyond the traditional .com. With a fresh range of options available, you can find a domain that truly represents your brand, values, or interests. So, go ahead and step into the exciting world of alternative domain names!

A Fresh Range of Domain Names Offers Options Beyond .Com

Hey, did you know that it’s getting really tough to find .com domain names these days? I mean, seriously, if you try searching for a .com name on sites like GoDaddy, you’ll probably end up feeling frustrated. And let’s face it, options like .org or .net just won’t cut it for most businesses.

But wait, it gets worse. There are these domain squatters who buy up thousands of names and hold them hostage. And they charge crazy high prices that small businesses like yours and mine just can’t afford.

Other Choices Instead of .com

A New Category of Domain Names Emerges, With More Options and Relevance

The good news is that there’s a new category of domains out there now. You’ve got alternatives to .com that range from .accountant to .boutique, .menu to .services, and even cool ones like .xyz. I mean, you’ve got so many options, it’s mind-boggling. There are literally hundreds to choose from!

A Fresh Range of Domain Names Offers Options Beyond .Com

Why so many, you might wonder? I had a chance to talk to Mike McLaughlin, who is in charge of domain names at GoDaddy, and he shared some interesting insights.

There are literally millions and millions of domain names being registered, McLaughlin said. Because of this, it has become more challenging to find a good name with the .com extension. But with the introduction of new domain extensions, there are now a lot more options available.

According to McLaughlin, these new domain extensions not only offer more choices, but they also have their own meanings and associations.

The new domain names give me more options, says McLaughlin. If you have a business that serves a specific area, you can get a domain that matches, like .london or .miami. You can also find ones that reflect the type of business you have, like .photography, .attorney, or .pharmacy. These new names offer more choices and make it more relevant.

A .Club domain for a men’s apparel site creates brand recognition

An example of a small business taking advantage of this new naming system is ManBrands.club. It’s an online store and subscription service that sells men’s clothing.

I had a chance to chat with the founder, Ry Russell, about why he decided to go with the new domain extension.

We launched our company two years ago, selling branded products for men, Russell said. We originally registered ManBrands.com, but when I saw that the .club extension was available, something just clicked. I thought it would give us a sense of sophistication and exclusivity that our customers would appreciate.

Russell also mentioned that the .club domain caught people’s attention, giving them an unexpected advantage in branding.

Since the .club domain is relatively new, it grabbed people’s attention and sparked conversations, Russell explained. It really sticks with people and adds value to our marketing and branding efforts. It’s not something they easily forget. As competition grows, it becomes crucial to find ways to stand out, and that’s exactly what .club has done for us.

Downsides of New Domain Names

Even though there are advantages, using the new domain names has some disadvantages, according to McLaughlin. One specific drawback is that when people search for a company by typing in what they think is the domain name, they automatically default to .com.

.com has become widely recognized, McLaughlin explained. It has a lot of social proof and everyone uses it. It’s still the preferred choice.

However, McLaughlin also pointed out that there are examples of names other than .com being used, especially in countries outside the U.S. In other markets, domains incorporate country codes like .uk (United Kingdom), .lt (Lithuania), or .ru (Russia) in addition to .com.

These domain names are important to the local communities, I said, and there are more than 100 million country code-related domain names, so the internet is not just about .com anymore. It has evolved over the years.

The Ethical Dilemma of Registering Similar Domain Names

But what about the ethics of registering a domain name using one of these extensions if there is already a business with the same name but with a .com?

First, we need to consider whether the company has a legal trademark for their name, I explained. If they do, it could be questionable to register a similar domain name. Second, it could confuse customers, especially if it represents a well-known brand, product, or service.

According to McLaughlin, if a business offers products and services that are completely different from each other, there is no ethical violation. However, if a company offers something that is very similar to another, it may cause some problems.

Tips for Registering a Domain Name

McLaughlin has some tips for registering a new domain name:

If you’re just starting your business, choose a name that perfectly represents what you’re trying to do, said McLaughlin. The new domains can help you with that. If you can get the .com domain, that’s great. But if not, find another alternative that still has a clear meaning. If you can get both the .com and the alternative domain, that’s the best option. Use one as your main domain and direct the other to it.

When you already have an established business and people know you by a specific name, the situation is different, McLaughlin explained. You want to choose a name that everyone recognizes. If you have the financial means, you can also consider purchasing a domain name that is available after the initial release at a reasonable price.

New Domain Names Show that Small Businesses are Growing

According to McLaughlin, the increase in domain names is a positive indication that more small businesses are entering the online market, both in the United States and worldwide.

As more people turn to online shopping, small businesses are doing the same, McLaughlin said. It’s an essential step to succeed in 2016. However, out of the 28 million small businesses in the United States, almost half still do not have their own website, so there is a lot of potential for growth.
