9 Fun and Exciting Ways to Get You Hooked on Impulse Buying in Your Store

Are you ignoring a potentially profitable type of product in your retail store? Let’s talk about impulse buying. Did you know that more than three-fourths of Americans have made a spontaneous purchase in the past three months? Surprisingly, over half of those people have spent over $100 on their impulsive buy, according to a survey by CreditCards.com.

How to Encourage Impulse Buying

Take a moment to observe the masters of the impulse buy like Target, HM, Sephora, and even Home Depot. By simply strolling through their aisles, you can learn a great deal. However, if you don’t have the time or resources for your own research expedition, fear not! I’ve got nine fantastic tips that will help you ignite more impulse buys in your store.

Lure Them In

Imagine this: you’re walking down the street, and something catches your eye from inside a store. You feel a sudden urge to go in and check it out. That’s the power of a well-placed impulse buy near the front of the store. Make sure the products are strategically positioned to be visible from the outside, enticing curious customers to step inside. Be cautious though, you don’t want those pesky shoplifters to easily grab them!

Stand Out with Color, Signs, and Lights to Grab Attention to Impulse Buys

When things are vibrant and eye-catching, they naturally catch your eye. The same goes for colorful displays and signs in the area where impulse buys are displayed. You can even have a sign that says something like Everything costs less than $10! It’s sure to grab attention!

Get Up Close and Personal

Make sure you put those low-priced impulse buys in places where shoppers simply can’t miss them. You can place them on end caps, at the checkout counter, or even right in the middle of the aisle. To figure out the best spots, keep track of where shoppers spend the most time in your store and set up mini impulse buy stations in those areas.

Use a Little Sneakiness

If you’ve got impulse buys that you want parents to buy for their kids, here’s a little trick: display them at eye level for children. You know how effective it can be to put candy in front of kids at the supermarket checkout line. The same principle applies here!

Keep Them Engaged While They Wait

When you’re waiting in line at the checkout counter, it can be fun to browse through nearby products and make impulse purchases. HM and Sephora are experts at making this experience enjoyable.

Make the Deal More Tempting

When you’re already tempted to buy something on impulse, a little extra push can be all it takes to convince you. For example, they might offer a deal like Buy two, get the third one free. It’s hard to resist such an offer.

Show and Tell

Almost every store can get customers to make impulse purchases by hosting demonstrations. Think about how Costco does it. A clothing store could have a fashion show, a kitchen store could demonstrate a cool new kitchen gadget, and a car parts store could show how a waterless car wash product works. Make sure to have plenty of the demonstrated products available and offer free samples as well.

Encourage Salespeople to Promote Impulse Buys

When I’m talking to customers, I like to suggest a few extra things that they might want to buy. It’s called an impulse buy because it’s something they didn’t plan on but might be interested in. For instance, if someone is trying on a pair of jeans, I might recommend a different color or style, or maybe even a belt or jacket that would go well with the jeans. It’s a way to help the customer find something they might not have thought of before.

It’s Important to Know What Kind of Products Make Good Impulse Buys

  • There are some products that just have a way of catching people’s attention and making them want to buy them right away. These products are usually things that feel nice or look enticing, like lotions, perfumes, makeup, candy, gum, or small toys.
  • Then there are the practical products that everyone needs. Sometimes, people buy things on impulse that they would normally have around their house anyway. This could be things like tissue, lip balm, batteries, or hand sanitizer. They’re the kinds of things you might find in someone’s purse, pocket, or junk drawer at home.

I have a tip for you! When you go shopping for something special, have you ever noticed the little things that go along with it? For instance, when I visit my local Nordstrom Rack, I see fun cell phone chargers shaped like purse charms near the handbag section, and lovely scented candles near the bedding area. It’s all about finding the right extras to go with what you’re looking for. Jewelry stores often offer jewelry cleaner or polishing cloths to keep your pieces looking their best. Shoe stores may have extra shoelaces available in different colors. And even automotive parts stores sometimes sell air fresheners to keep your car smelling great. The idea is to have those little things that complement and enhance your main purchase. So next time you go shopping, keep an eye out for these delightful add-ons!
