Today, more and more employees are being enrolled in high-deductible health insurance plans, which means they have to pay a larger portion of the costs themselves. As a result, healthcare has become one of the biggest challenges for workers in the US.
How I Feel About Health Insurance
Surprisingly, 74% of employers believe that their employees have enough options to help cover their healthcare expenses. However, despite this belief, a vast majority of employees (85%) recognize the need for additional insurance benefits to supplement their current coverage.
When it comes to understanding insurance and benefits, 6 out of every 10 workers say it’s a stressful experience. And it seems like millennials (those born between 1981 and 1996) and Generation Z (those born between 1997 and 2012) are feeling the stress the most. 66% of millennials and 63% of Gen Zers find medical billing to be a stressful ordeal. Overall, 43% of all employees find the process of enrolling in health insurance to be somewhat or very stressful, but that number increases to 51% for millennials and 55% for Gen Zers.
Last year, there were signs of hope and positivity, with employees being more satisfied with their benefits and jobs. However, the 2019 Aflac WorkForces Report tells a different story. It reveals that American workers are feeling stressed about making important decisions regarding their health insurance and are less satisfied with the benefits that are being offered, says Matthew Owenby, senior vice president and chief human resources officer at Aflac.
So, what has changed?

Why is healthcare so important to me? Well, one big reason is my family history. When it comes to choosing health insurance, my family’s medical background plays a significant role. It turns out I’m not the only one who feels this way – 73% of employees, including 80% of millennials and 75% of Gen Z, consider their family history when making health insurance decisions. That’s pretty influential!
It’s not just me and my family who put importance on family history. Many people, especially younger generations like Gen Z (95%) and millennials (89%), acknowledge that illnesses like cancer, heart attacks, and strokes can be linked to their family’s medical past. And if faced with a serious illness, 84% of us would even consider purchasing insurance to help with the costs.
But here’s the thing – all of these concerns and decisions surrounding healthcare are taking a toll on American workers. The satisfaction we feel in our jobs has dropped from 65% in 2018 to just 61% now. It’s clear that the healthcare debate is affecting us in more ways than one.
The Healthcare Debate
Let’s talk about some interesting findings I came across. They show that many people have been affected by the ongoing national debate on healthcare. You know, that big conversation happening all over the country? Well, 38% of individuals say that this debate has actually helped them understand their health care options better. That’s pretty cool, right?
However, there’s a flip side too. Around 24% of people feel more confused about their choices because of this discussion. And guess what? This confusion is even more common among younger generations. For example, a whopping 78% of Gen Zers feel that the debate has helped them better understand their options.
Now, here’s something that caught my attention. Did you know that less than half of workers, only 46%, have a clear understanding of how much their healthcare coverage and care costs them in a year? That’s less than last year when it was 50%. It’s good to know this stuff, right?
What’s more, only 35% of people really understand their health insurance policy, which is a decrease from 39% in 2018. That’s a bit concerning, wouldn’t you agree?
