11 Tips to Prevent Technical Issues with Google Hangouts

By Ronald Smith

Today, I want to share with you some helpful tricks to avoid any pesky technical problems when using Google Hangouts. Now, I know these glitches can be frustrating, but don’t worry! With these tips, you’ll be able to enjoy smooth and trouble-free video calls. Let’s get started!

1. Strong Internet Connection: First things first, make sure you have a reliable and stable internet connection. This will ensure that your video calls are crystal clear and uninterrupted.

2. Update Your Browser: To keep things running smoothly, keep your browser up to date. New updates often include fixes and improvements that help enhance your Hangouts experience.

3. Clear Cache and Cookies: Sometimes, accumulated cache and cookies can cause conflicts. So, periodically clear them from your browser settings to keep everything running smoothly.

4. Disable Browser Extensions: Some browser extensions may interfere with Hangouts. To avoid any conflicts, try disabling or removing unnecessary extensions that you don’t need.

5. Choose the Right Device: When joining a Hangout, make sure you’re using a device that meets the system requirements. This will help ensure that you have the necessary resources to handle video calls.

6. Close Other Programs: Running multiple programs simultaneously can strain your device’s resources. Before starting a Hangout, close any unnecessary programs to free up memory and avoid potential glitches.

7. Test Your Audio and Video: It’s always a good idea to check your audio and video settings before starting a call. Make sure your microphone and camera are working correctly to prevent any surprises.

8. Adjust Bandwidth Usage: If you’re experiencing poor video quality or buffering during a call, try reducing the bandwidth usage. This can help prioritize the Hangout and optimize your connection.

9. Enable HD Calls: If you have a strong internet connection, enabling HD video calls can enhance the overall quality of your Hangouts. Just go to your settings and enable the HD feature.

10. Hangout with Fewer Participants: Sometimes, having too many people in a Hangout can strain your connection. Consider limiting the number of participants to ensure a smoother experience for everyone.

11. Restart Your Device: When all else fails, don’t hesitate to give your device a fresh start. Sometimes a simple restart can resolve any lingering issues and get your Hangouts back on track.

So there you have it! By following these tips, you can minimize technical glitches and enjoy uninterrupted and seamless Hangouts. Happy video chatting!

11 Tips to Prevent Technical Issues with Google Hangouts

Back in the day, Skype used to be the go-to app for group video chats. However, Google Hangouts has been steadily climbing up the ranks and giving Skype a run for its money.

But there’s one pesky problem that seems to follow Hangouts around: technical glitches. So how can you avoid these hiccups and have a smooth video chat experience with Google Hangouts?

Here are some tips to help your chats run more smoothly:

1. Be Early to Spot and Fix Potential Issues

Showing up at the last minute and hoping for the best is a risky move. Ivana Taylor from DIY Marketing suggests arriving early to address any possible problems. This can be as simple as making sure you’re not accidentally muted (which happens more often than you’d think). Also, double-check your microphone and webcam to ensure everything is working properly.

In a recent interview with USamerica.US, Taylor shared some valuable tips for hosting a successful live video broadcast.

“…make sure to gather in the hangout room at least 30 minutes before your live broadcast begins. This way, you can address any unexpected issues that may arise, such as poor connections or malfunctioning cameras.

Step 2: Check Your Internet Connection Speed

Sometimes, the internet speed promised by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) may not match the actual speed you are experiencing. It’s important to test your current internet speed to ensure it meets your expectations and is not significantly slower than what you are paying for.

If you want to check your internet speed, you can use a tool like Speed Test. It’s a handy web app that helps you test how fast your upload and download speeds are. To get started, just click the green Begin Test button and let the app do its thing.

Once the test is done, you can compare the results with the package you have from your internet service provider (ISP). If the speeds don’t match up, it might be a good idea to give your ISP a call. But before you do that, there’s something else you should consider.

3. Give Your Modem and Router a Fresh Start

To restart your modem and router, all you have to do is unplug the cable from the back, wait a few seconds, and then plug it back in. This will give them a quick reboot, and in most cases, it should make your internet a little faster (unless there’s another issue causing the problem).

4. Close Unnecessary Software and Browser Tabs

If you don’t have a ton of RAM in your computer, it won’t be able to handle everything all at once. So, if you think you can use Google Hangouts while also downloading big files, running security checks, or doing other intense things in the background, think again.

When you’re on Hangouts, it’s best to close all those other programs.

This goes for browser tabs too. If you like to have 50+ tabs open at once, your Internet speed is going to slow down. Close all but the necessary ones. Firefox and Chrome let you bookmark all the open tabs at once, so put them in a temporary folder and close them for now.

5. Don’t Get Locked Out of Your Own Hangout

As a tip, I suggest going to the Google Hangout tab in the main menu. There, you can schedule a hangout on-air and make sure to click later. It’s important to invite your circles or the public to attend, instead of presenting. This step is crucial to avoid being locked out of your own event.

Now, let’s talk about keeping your microphone at the right distance from your mouth. When using an external microphone, some people think it’s necessary to bring it close to their mouth to be heard. However, this actually has the opposite effect. It causes your voice to break up and create a lot of static. So, remember to keep a comfortable distance between your microphone and your mouth to ensure a clear sound.

Instead, make sure to position your microphone at an appropriate distance from you. If your microphone is functioning properly, it will capture your voice without any issues, as long as you have adjusted the volume correctly.

7. Eliminate Any Disturbing Background Sounds

When I join a Hangout, it’s important for me to be able to speak so that others can hear me. However, this can be a challenge if there are distractions like people talking or noises in the background.

When I work from home, I need to make sure that the TV is turned off and there’s no music playing in the background. I should also be aware of any sounds like dogs barking or children yelling that could disrupt the call.

Before I start the call, it’s a good idea for me to ask everyone around me to keep quiet. If that’s not possible, I can try moving to a different room and closing the door to create a quiet space where I won’t be disturbed.

8. Make sure to disable any programs that might be using the camera

If I try to join a Hangout while another program like Skype is running, my webcam might not work properly. This is because the webcam is set up to work with Skype and not with Hangouts. As a result, I could end up with just a static profile photo instead of a live video.

9. Keep the Call Small

Google Hangouts lets you have up to 10 people on a call at once. But just because you can have that many people doesn’t mean you should. The more people in the call, the harder Hangouts has to work.

So only invite the people who really need to be there. If 10 people show up, but only 5 actually need to be there, politely ask the others to leave.

10. Stick with Google Chrome (Not Canary)

There are many internet browsers out there, but if you want the best Hangouts experience, use Google’s own Chrome. Hangouts runs faster and smoother on Chrome. Other browsers will work, but they won’t match the speed of Chrome.

Just a little heads up, it’s important to avoid using the Canary version of Chrome. You see, Canary is like a super experimental version and it’s filled with lots of bugs that they’re still fixing. It’s not quite ready for prime time yet. Instead, go ahead and use the stable release of Chrome, and you won’t run into any issues.

11. Double-Check Your Battery and WiFi

So, you’re all set to have video chats on the go using Hangouts on your smartphone or tablet. Cool, right? Well, before you start, let me give you a couple of important tips to make sure everything goes smoothly.

First things first, make sure your device is fully charged. Trust me, you don’t want your video chat to suddenly cut off because your battery is about to die. It can be really frustrating, and it happens more often than you think when your battery is down to its last 10%.

Next up, it’s essential to check your WiFi connection. WiFi can be a bit tricky sometimes, especially compared to a good old Ethernet cable. So, before you jump into your video chat, log in well in advance and make sure your WiFi is fast and stable. You don’t want a bad connection to ruin a perfectly good conversation, right?

Now, let’s talk about Hangouts. It’s a pretty awesome tool for communication, no doubt about that. But let’s face it, like any new and sometimes unpredictable application, there can be downsides. However, if you follow these tips, you’ll be prepared and ready to enjoy the full benefits of Hangouts without any hiccups.
