A Simple Guide to Getting Your Twitter Security Keys

  1. First, go to the Twitter Apps section in Application Management on Twitter.
  2. Log in with your Twitter account’s username and password.
  3. Now, click on the Create New App button on the top right of the page after you sign in.
  4. On the next page, you’ll see some fields to fill out in the Application Details form:
    • Name – choose a name for your app, like yoursitename Twitter Feed.
    • Description – be clear about what your app does, like This app allows me to display my Twitter feed on my website.
    • Website – enter your website’s address, including http:// and www.
    • Callback URL – this is not important for our purpose, so you can leave it empty.

First, let me explain this process in simpler terms. Here’s what you need to do:

    1. Look at the form on the same page. Below that, you’ll see something called the Developer Rules of the Road. Take a moment to read through those rules. Once you’re done, there will be a radio box that says Yes, I agree. Tick that box. Finally, click the button that says Create your Twitter application.
    2. Now, you’ll be taken to another page. It should look something like the image below. On that page, find a tab that says Keys and Access Tokens. Click on it.
    3. On this page, you’ll see four keys that are important for your application. They are highlighted in yellow in the image. The four keys you need are:
      • The Consumer Key (also known as the API Key)
      • The Consumer Secret (also known as the API Secret)
      • The Access Token
      • The Access Token Secret
      • It’s essential to write down all four of these numbers. You will need them later when you’re setting up Twitter plugins on your website.
