If you’ve got a small business with 25 employees or less and not much IT help, but you need a way to manage devices, store data, and stay connected, then Windows Server Essentials is exactly what you need!

Microsoft, the genius behind Windows Server Essentials (officially known as Windows Server Essentials 2012 R2), is well-known for their powerful, yet complicated server solutions. But with Windows Server Essentials, they’ve taken a different approach to meet the needs of small businesses – simplicity.

That’s right, Microsoft Server Essentials may have fewer fancy features compared to their other server options, but it’s super easy to set up, manage, and it doesn’t include things that small businesses with less than 25 employees usually don’t need anyway.

Alright, let’s dive in and find out more about Windows Server Essentials and how you can use it for your business.

What is Windows Server Essentials?

Windows Server Essentials is Microsoft’s special solution for small businesses, including those run from home. It’s designed to be easy to use, especially for businesses that don’t have a lot of IT support. This shows how committed Microsoft is to serving this particular market.

That user-friendliness is important in two ways:

  • Simple setup: The process of setting up Windows Server Essentials is the smoothest experience ever developed by Microsoft. You’ll be guided through a checklist that explains everything along the way:

  1. Navigation Bar: When I want to find specific information or complete certain tasks, all I have to do is click on a section in the Navigation Bar. This will take me to the relevant information and tasks related to that section. Every time I open the Dashboard, the Home page always appears first.
  2. Category pane: The Category pane is really helpful because it shows me different areas of interest. These areas give me quick access to important information and tools that I can use to set up and customize the server. If I click on a category, it will display specific tasks and resources associated with that category.
  3. Tasks pane: In the Tasks pane, I can find links to specific tasks and information that relate to the category I’ve selected. If I click on a task or resource, it will show me more detailed information and guidance on how to proceed.
  4. Action pane: This cool little panel right here gives you a quick summary of what each feature or task is all about. If you want to dig deeper, just click on the links provided. They’ll take you to configuration wizards and information pages where you can take action!

Microsoft has gone above and beyond to make things super easy for you, and they’ve even created a nifty knowledge base to help you get up to speed.

Price Tag

Guess what? Windows Server Essentials only costs $501! That’s way cheaper than any of the other Microsoft Windows server versions. This is perfect for its target market, who usually have smaller budgets. And you know what’s even better? A quick search online showed that there are even cheaper buying options available.

What’s Windows Server Essentials Missing?

  • Virtualization: Unfortunately, Windows Server Essentials can’t be used as a Hyper-V host, and the server license doesn’t include virtualization rights. Just a little side note, though: you can still run Windows Server Essentials on a virtual machine.
  • Server core: Windows Server Essentials doesn’t support server core. However, the businesses that this solution is aimed at probably won’t need that feature anyway.
  • Active Directory Federation Services (ADFS): Server Essentials doesn’t use Active Directory Federation Services (ADFS) for single sign-on.
  • Exchange, SharePoint, SQL Server, and Windows Server Update Services: You can install these separately. However, Windows Essentials Server has a workaround that’s designed to support its target market. I’ll explain more about this soon.

Like I mentioned before, the things that were left out aren’t usually necessary for a small business with 25 or fewer employees. But if you really need one of these features, it’s worth checking out the other Microsoft server options.

How do you use Microsoft Server Essentials for your business?

  • Shared folders: Sharing files within shared folders is the foundation of server technology. When you install Windows Server Essentials, this feature is already set up and ready to use.
  • Users and groups: To share folders and files, you need to set up permissions. Users and groups are how you control who can access what.
  • Integration with hosted services and apps: Microsoft understands that small businesses may not have their own versions of Exchange, SharePoint, SQL Server, and Windows Server Update Services. That’s why they’ve made it easy to integrate with externally hosted versions using the dashboard. You can also integrate with Office 365 and Windows Azure.

I love this feature called Storage Spaces! With Storage Spaces, I can manage the storage of my server in a pool instead of going drive by drive. This makes the whole storage management process so much easier. It’s perfect for Windows Server Essentials.

Another great feature is Media sharing. I can easily share photos, videos, and music with others on my network or even over the internet. It’s a great way to showcase my favorite memories with others.

And let’s not forget about Remote access. With Remote access, my employees can work from anywhere, even on the road. Setting up remote access has never been easier, and I can even manage access for mobile devices. It’s a game-changer for my business.

Last but not least, we have Backup. With a Windows Essential Server, I can easily configure it to backup both server files and client files. This means that all my important files are safely backed up, including the files on my Windows 8 PCs connected to the network.

Overall, Windows Server Essentials is an amazing tool that simplifies storage management, allows for easy media sharing, enables remote access, and ensures all my files are securely backed up. It’s a must-have for any business owner.

  • Health Reports: Keep an eye on any part or process of your server. You can even set up alerts and get reports about it.
  • BranchCache: This cool feature helps you save internet data and makes accessing data from external sources faster by storing it locally.

Conclusion

Installing and managing it is easy. It’s strong enough to support businesses like yours and the price is competitive. Microsoft has really nailed it with Windows Server Essentials.

If you have a small business with 25 or fewer employees and you need or want the features mentioned above, then this solution is perfect for you.
