I want to share some awesome stories with you about how real business owners are using social media to boost their success. These examples will blow your mind and inspire you to take your own business to the next level!
Let me tell you about this amazing bakery owner, Jane. She started using social media to promote her delicious treats and connect with her customers. By posting mouthwatering photos of her pastries and engaging with her followers, Jane gained a huge online following. People couldn’t resist the temptation and flocked to her bakery, resulting in a massive increase in sales. All thanks to social media!
Now, let’s talk about John, who owns a small clothing boutique. He realized the power of social media and decided to use it to his advantage. John started sharing fashion tips, outfit ideas, and even behind-the-scenes glimpses of his store. This not only attracted new customers but also strengthened his relationship with existing ones. His social media presence became so popular that influencers started recommending his boutique, bringing even more attention and customers his way.
Lastly, meet Sarah, a fitness trainer who decided to leverage social media to promote her services. She started sharing workout routines, healthy recipes, and motivational posts. By showcasing her expertise and engaging with her audience, Sarah became an online fitness sensation. Her social media presence established her as a trusted fitness expert, leading to more clients signing up for her training sessions.
So, you see, social media can work wonders for business owners like you and me. By sharing our passion, connecting with our audience, and being authentic, we can reach new heights of success. Now, it’s your turn to dive into the exciting world of social media and watch your business flourish!
When I speak at events, I find that the audience responds best when I talk less and encourage them to share their own examples and ideas. This makes the event more interactive and interesting for everyone involved because we all benefit from a wider range of experiences.
The event I attended on Monday with a group of small-business owners in Houston, Texas was no different.
During the event, I asked the attendees if they were using various social media websites and online Web 2.0 tools. If they answered yes, I would then follow up by asking them about the results they were seeing.
In this post, I want to share with you some of the things those business owners said about their real-life experiences with social media.
About the Event:
I went to an event called Women in Business, which HP organized for the NAWBO (National Association of Women Business Owners) and WBEA (Women’s Business Enterprise Alliance) members in Houston. HP wanted to reach out to women in business and small business owners, to talk and learn about the challenges they face. Even though the majority of people at the event were women, I noticed a few men there as well. They were mainly co-owners or employees of women-owned businesses.
Here I am, attending the second event in the amazing HP Women in Business series. I’ve already been to one in San Diego, and let me tell you, they’ve both been fantastic. They have this chill vibe where everyone just wants to talk and listen to each other. So, it’s only natural that we ask questions and share our thoughts at this event, too.
Let me start by sharing some good experiences I’ve heard about:
- One business owner said that participating in discussion forums and blogs has brought her new and returning customers. She runs a muscle therapy business and by sharing her knowledge and answering questions in these online platforms, she shows her value to her clients and potential clients.
- Facebook – I want to share with you two stories about how business owners have found success using Facebook. One business owner, just like you, has a business profile page and a personal profile page on Facebook. They have been able to reach a lot of people and get great results for their business through these pages. Another business owner runs a Facebook group for their business. By doing this, they attract a lot of interest and build loyalty among their customers.
- Online press releases – I have a friend who regularly puts out press releases online, and she has found that it really helps her website show up in search engines. This means more people can find her website and learn about her business.
- Online video – Have you ever watched a video on YouTube? Well, there is a business owner who uploaded videos on YouTube for their product company, and it worked wonders for them. The videos not only brought more people to their website but also kept existing visitors engaged. It’s amazing how something as simple as a video can make such a big difference!
- Twitter — So here’s the deal: I gotta admit, there’s this one person, a business owner, who’s totally hooked on Twitter. Like, seriously obsessed. They can’t get enough of it. It’s like their go-to place for making and strengthening connections, as well as getting the word out about their awesome business. But here’s the thing, my friend, they’re kinda rare in that respect. Most folks aren’t quite as Twitter-obsessed as this champion.
The event begins with a bang as Lisa Baker, HP’s Vice President, takes the stage.
Concerns and Worries
- Not enough time to learn and use social media tools — The main worry that kept coming up was, Who has the time to deal with all this social media stuff? As a few others in the audience pointed out, the smartest move is to pick a couple of tools and really focus on mastering those. One person even suggested sharing the responsibility of updating the company blog among multiple employees. (On a side note, it seems like there’s a great chance for a company to step in and offer help with social media activities.)
- Feeling uneasy about sharing information online — One business owner told us that she often gets requests to connect on LinkedIn, but she’s not comfortable sharing her information on the internet. Another business owner in the crowd reassured her that using LinkedIn wouldn’t lead to a barrage of unwanted messages, but could actually help her make valuable connections with other trustworthy business people.
- When I was approached by two business owners who were concerned about spam comments on their blogs, I assured them that they had complete control and could manage any spam or inappropriate comments that might appear. It’s important to remember that you are always in charge, and you can easily moderate and filter out any unwanted content.
- One question that came up quite often was about the difference between a blog and a forum. Many people were unsure about the distinction between the two. While there are several differences, the main point I made was that on a blog, the owner has the power to choose the topics and start the discussions, although readers can also contribute. In contrast, in a forum, anyone can initiate a discussion topic.
- Curious about beginning a blog- Many individuals have inquired about how and where to start a blog. My suggestion is to try setting up a free blog on platforms like Blogger.com or WordPress.com, to see if you enjoy engaging in regular blogging. One audience member even recommended Blogger.com as her preferred blogging platform.
There were many other discussions, but this example offers a glimpse into the experiences and concerns of small business owners regarding social media.
I want to give a big shout-out to Yvonne Bourquin from HP for leading the charge on this awesome day!

I would also like to thank Lisa Baker, Sheila Watson, Bill Seidle, and countless others who supported the event and made my participation possible.
