Working together as a team is super important and pretty much unavoidable when you have a small business. Whether you’ve got just a few people or a whole bunch on your payroll, you need to depend on each other to make your business successful and get to know each other really well.

The closer your team is both personally and professionally, the better they’ll work together and stay motivated. They’ll actually like coming to work, feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and concerns, and support each other when things get tough. The thing is, you can’t make people be close. But, what you can do is take some steps to help your small business team work together as closely as possible:

1. Start with a Strong Small Business Team from the Very Beginning

I have an important task – selecting and putting together a team of people who can work well together. It’s crucial to find team members with lots of energy and who are willing to work as part of a team. If someone prefers to work alone or is hard to communicate with, they might not be a good fit for our collective team. It’s also helpful to look for people with different skills or backgrounds to foster closer working relationships.

2. Proactively Find and Solve Problems

I learned from the Harvard Business Review that the best way to solve conflicts between two people is to address them before they become big problems. As a leader, it’s my responsibility to pay attention to any subtle signs in my team that something might be wrong, even if they don’t notice it themselves. If I see a potential conflict brewing between two of my employees, I need to find a way to work it out before it starts interfering with our work. By being proactive and resolving conflicts early on, we can have fewer disputes and a more united and happy team overall.

During these meetings, it is my responsibility to ensure that everyone contributes and shares their thoughts. I want to encourage conversations and discussions among my team members, so that we can create an environment of active listening and respect for one another. Another way to promote group participation is by making our office atmosphere more open and encouraging people to communicate with each other.

In most of this article, I’ve been talking about the team in terms of your whole company. But remember, you can also create smaller teams within that larger group. Choose two or three people to collaborate on a specific project or task, and mix up your group assignments. Encourage people to work closely with each other, and make sure everyone on your team has a chance to work with each person individually. This will create more diverse work environments, improve problem-solving skills, foster closer relationships, and ultimately, strengthen your team.

7. Embrace Unpopular or Minority Opinions

So here’s the thing, according to a report from RICE University, sometimes when a group of people work closely together, they start thinking in the same way. It’s like they all adopt this accepted way of thinking that becomes the norm. But here’s the catch – when someone has an issue or a concern, they might keep it to themselves because they don’t want to go against the group. As a leader, it’s in your best interest to encourage and welcome these unpopular opinions. You gotta hear what everyone has to say, even if it’s not the popular view. Why? Because it helps the group and the company as a whole. And even more important than that, when you create an atmosphere of trust and really listen to your team, it makes everyone feel valued and like they belong.
